I am looking for a public range near Bloomington Indiana. - southeast of Bloomington would be ideal.

I have found a few outdoor ranges... but they won't help.

Does anyone know of an indoor range near Bloomington???

Thanks!

Man, when I was there in the mid-'80s, there was an indoor range on 37 in Bton, and another in the student union. (Tejon, you were rangemaster there, no?) There was also a nice outdoor shooting range not far off campus to the northeast.

:( Times change.

I remember hearing about the one in the Student Union, can't even imagine such a thing on the IU campus.

*seconds Logistar's question*

Logistar: I'm from Bloomington and work at IU and after some research, I find there are no ranges (indoor or outdoor) on campus. The off-campus range Erich mentions has been closed for some time. I am also not familiar with one near Martinsville but will check on that and get back with you. Greenwood might be the closest but that is north of Bloomington.

Erich, yes, Rangemonster Tio Tejon. :D What a great job--read "Shotgun News", debate 9mm v. .45, and help the young and nubile with their stances (that gig is how I met Ms. Su, but that's not THR kind of stuff). :D

Plus, I got to shoot all the DCM ammo I wanted to and ROTC had me help out by sorting out the young doggies on their 16s.

Zero, it was underneath the Student Union. The door let out onto Dunn Meadow. Nice big back area, my desk, about a dozen firing points, lockers and a big vault for ROTC to store their gear.

Thanks guys! (You too RETTI!)

I guess my search is not going very well. :uhoh:

DSL is still down at home but I got the posts when I got to work today.

Thanks for the help anyway!

P.S. Welcome to the board RETTI! There is a wealth of information here and lots of people willing to share their experience and knowledge!

The Martinsville range off of 37 would be the Conservation Club. The range is closed down until at least February as there is logging going on as well as range improvements and expansion. There's a plinking spot available but it's not a formal range. Drop me a line if something like this would help.

The outdoor range in B'ton was run by Sycamore Valley wasn't it? The one that the various PD's used? If that's the group you're thinking of, they moved to Freedom, IN. I don't believe they allow uninvited guests and their dues are HIGH (I only pay $25/yr. at Martinsville).

Hope this helps!

Take Care,
Mike

I am looking for a place where a new shooter could practice. Indoor ranges are very nice - especially THIS time of year.

I think it is better to learn indoors (fewer distractions, targets can be adjusted, changed, etc.)

Looks like there just might not be much available.

M39fan, is the Conservation Club public and indoor? (How about 1 out of 2?) :)

You might find some helpful info here: http://www.wabashvalleyshooters.com/

I'm new to the Indy area sorta, so I only know of a few here in town. Popguns is a pretty nice place on the east side ( www.popguns.com ) , and theres a run down kinda place called dons guns ( www.donsguns.com )

Anyone from the Indy area tried the outdoor one? (eagle creek park) http://www.ecpr.4t.com/ Outdoor only, but it looks decent.

Its a shame you dont have any good places over there! Kinda looks like Martinsville is the closest sofar...

Oh, and hello to everyone! Think this was my first post :neener:

In Indy, only go to Popguns. Don's (to me) is a dump, and they are a ripoff. They have one screen door going right into the range, meaning if someone is standing in the store area outside that door, they get the full brunt of the gun blast sound with un-covered ears if someone opens the door while another is shooting.
The one advantage there is they have one lane for high powered rifles. For handgun shooting in Indy however, Popguns is much better. They have a two-door buffer system to get into the shooting area, and they're more professional. I see law enforcement guys at Popguns quite often, either looking, buying or shooting.

I'll never set foot in Don's. Back when that cop got killed by some mental patient with an SKS, he came on all the local news networks, saying the SKS was a deadly assault weapon. Yet he continues to sell them.

Not to mention his gang and mob connections.

Meanwhile, the guys at Pop Guns came on the news last September to explain the real deal with the AWB.

I wont do business with either Popguns or Dons guns any longer, both of them jumped on the "SKS hysteria bandwagon" to get some air-time on the local news (free advertising).

The best range I have found in the central Indiana area is the Fall Creek Valley Conservation Club, http://www.FCVCC.org

The range under the Union appeared active when I was there in '98-'01.

I shot hipower with these guys a couple times. The webpage has a map to their indoor range.

Is that little antique shop on the square (with the rows and rows of dusty rifles) still in business?

ahhhhh, Bloomington.

Place to shoot

Go to sportsmansguide.com ....... bottom of the page left side "Where to Shoot". You need the zip code to find a place and I didn't have the one for Bloomington. Good luck. :)

Bix,

I heard that the old lady that ran that gun shop portion pasted away last year. Not for certain about that but that is what I heard on this board in fact. Very cool store. Sad that is no longer.

I thought that the Fall Creek Valley Conservation Club was only a skeet and trap club?

Do they allow rifles and pistols? Inquiring minds want to know.

I checked your link to FCVCC and was wondering where in the world is Markelville. I've lived in or around Indy my whole life, but can't remember ever hearing of that town.

Jspy,

Its near Pendleton/Anderson.

ZeroX,

Yea it might be a bit of a drive from Bloomington, I used to live just south of Bloomington in Oolitic/Bedford, but I cant recall any shooting ranges in that area.

Of course I had an improvised range down in a gully, on my property back then, so I wasnt exactly looking very hard.
