Well the wife gave me the go ahead on a new piece for the collection. I am wanting another collectable 22lr. I'm a big winchester fan so I am looking at either a model 61 or 62 in a pump. Or... Possibly a model 63 semi auto. I already have a 9422 and a 52. Give me some input to help me make my mind up! I know they are all three pricey. Im looking for unique, cool factor and collectibility

I prefer the 63 with a short factory barrel. Im also quirky because I like to look for old 22s with nicely mounted vintage glass. Some of the old mounts look cool.

Marlin model 39a, pre safety, earlier the better (in function as well as collectability).

al,

I have had those guns for a lifetime and indeed they are fine.

I saw the prices the other day in a Cabela's Library and the market is asking big money for those 'collectables'.

Go easy on this because any .22 will fill the want for a while until you have a collection some day, some way.

For the time being get by with what's out there function wise.

Tell us what .22 you would use the most and then a selection can be made from what's out there.

For instance I wanted a .17 HMR rifle and came across a CZ 455 combo where I got what is a decent well made rifle in both .17 and a .22 barrel. I noticed a mark on the stock and got a deal on it. It's very accurate with the .17 bbl.

I never put the .22 bbl on.

Here is my M75 Sporting 22. It has very good walnut. I drilled and tapped it's receiver for bases and put an old Lyman 6X on it.

I never really used it much except to look at the walnut. Any .22 will do the same thing. Just wait for some old guy or aunt to give you something easy.

Not interested in a Marlin. I know they are great rifles. I just want a winchester. Already have a 9422. I won't be taking this out hunting in the brush (already have a 10/22, cz 455, and old glenfield for that). It will be mostly an investment and occasional plinker. I wanted opinions on the three i mentioned. Hoping someone had experience with all three and could tell me which is their favorite and why. Maybe one is not as reliable as the others?

These are listed for sale at Dales auto sales. on Facebook. Any interest. not mine just came across them.

I would lean towards the 63.
I know the pump is the standard .22 "repeater" of the era, but I just don't like the wobbly feel of the pump handle/foreend.

I like the Model 74 semi-auto. They were actually used by the British as OSS sniper rifles. Winchester made some nice 22's.

Model 61s are waaay over priced IMHO. get a Model 75 for much less and have a way better shooting iron. You can get a good deal on Model 62 hammer guns and they are fun. Model 63s are very unique and tend to shoot well but are a little ammo finiky. Can't beat a pre safety Marlin Model 39 !

Well just pulled the trigger on a model 61 tonight. We have a guns and ammo swap shop locally on facebook. I posted that I was looking for a nice older Winchester .22 and a guy PM'd me. Pretty clean overall. Has a little freckling on the receiver. It is a later one with a grooved top.

Yes the M61 grooved is the 22 sporter I have used the most also.

It would be easier with a clip fed rifle as the tubes are not so easy to unload.

Congrats on the find! I wouldn't mind seeing pics of your Winchester when you get it.
