I finally have enough spare money to buy a real rifle. I don't like magazines (so I'm going bolt action), don't care to shoot past 300 yards (.308 is my plan), and have terrible eyes (some kind of scope).

I'm looking at a Remington model Seven:

With this scope mount:

And some form of low power long relief scope:

I'll need a sling and.....can I have a backup sight machined onto this rifle without getting too expensive? Altogether I'll invest $1200 or so. I'm really looking to learn to shoot.

What do you guys think?

I feel that you should either go with a remington ltr or a savage 10fp as a starting point.

I am building a very similar rifle. Mine will be based on a M700 because I am left handed and they don't make M7s lefthanded. The Scout Rifle concept is for a general purpose rifle that while not the best at anything does just about everything pretty well. Mine is in the building stage but I have hunted with it a time or two and killed a couple of wild hogs with it.

If you go with the Savage, you save a few dollars and actually you can probably get a more accurate rifle out of the box with a Savage. The new Acu-triggers are very nice. I am not using a Savage for the rifle that I am building because I got the M700 (used) for next to nothing as part of a trade. I would have had to bought a Savage. If I was buying new, I would buy the Savage.

If you go with the M7 you will probably have a lighter rifle than if you use a Savage. Also you will not have to have the barrel shortened and I think that a M7 comes with iron sights so you have a front sight (the base covers where the rear sights would be) so that you just need to add a rear peep.

On the Leupold scout scope, there are two reticules. One is a typical duplex. The other is a very, very big German three post. The duplex allows more precise aiming but the 3Post is big and fast to get on target.

Eric Ching designed the sling most often seen on scout rifles. There are a number of makers. If you google "ching sling" you will find photos, instructions, makers etc.

Williams makes various rear peep sights that will fit either a M7 or the Savage rifles with no gunsmithing.

Good luck with your project.

wait!!!!!

dont buy that rem yet. check out the m63 tanker mauser at mauser.org. this is the new site for mitchells mausers. read a review in rifle or rifleshooter (forget wich) and the reveiwer had nothing but good things to say. the reviewer had ordered and installed the special performance kit #1. comes with a comp. trigger and scout scope, rings, and mounts. the gun and kit together would cost half what you were thinking of spending and is available in 308 and others. happy hunting.

I took a look at the Mauser, and they want almost as much as the Remington, and it is way too heavy and cumbersome for what I'm looking for.

Right now I think I'm going to order the Remington, mount, and scope, then worry about backup sights and a sling a little later.
