I have a few dollars to buy a new defensive rifle. This will be my only rifle for while. I am looking at 4 guns right now....

1. VEPR II AK-47, folding stock, 7.62x39mm- these look like very fun rifles, I hear they are very accurate and heavy, but extremely reliable. I do NOT want another ghetto AK like my SAR-1, the finish was horrible on that. I think the price on these is somewhere between $550-600, and magazines and ammo are dirt cheap. I want a folding stock rifle to take to hotels with me, lugging the 20" remington 870 is getting old.
2. Bushmaster AR-15, 16"bbl, 5.56mm- ARs are fun to shoot, and extremely light. Magazines/ammo are everywhere. I have never shot a bushmaster that did not jam frequently (I've shot 3, all unreliable) and they were almost as accurate as my SAR-1. Is that normal for a bushy? I can get one of these for somewhere between $700-800
3. Ruger Mini-14 5.56mm- I had one a few years ago, it never jammed. Great gun, and now you can get factory 20 rounders for it. I can get one of these for around $550. I'd get one of these over a bushmaster, just because I like the action on the mini more. I dropped mine in a muddy riverbank once, cleared the barrel, shot it, and watched the mud sling off of the action as it went!
4. Marlin .357magnum 1894C. I'd love a pistol caliber carbine to go with all my K-frames. I'd spend a few more dollars and put a scout mount and GR sights on it. The project would probably cost around $700-800, depending on what kind of optics I put on it.

Which of the 4 would you all get?

Didn't see a Rem 700 on your list! :) Nice rifle of course.

With what you have mentioned I would (just me) leave out the two .223's. Handy guns but - here, and assuming long range probably not a factor - I'd consider the AK and Marlin 94.

Two very different deals tho - if you want capacity, reliability and pretty useful performance then the AK probably wins. OTOH, I love my .44 and .357 levers - they do make excellent use of a pistol round. However - reloads are slow - and even the action is a tad slow compared to a semi of course.

The decision will naturally be yours but my thinking is between #1 and #4. Closest I can whittle it down for now. Of course - an ability to buy #1 AND #2 would be even better - and all four, better still! :D

Me, I'd get the Marlin.
If you've just gotta get a an AR-15, look at Rock River. They've withstood alot of torture testing to get the DEA contract. Very accurate, too.

Marlin, easily. :D

VEPRs are nice, but not THE nicest AKs you can get.

You're soured on ARs, it seems.

You've already had a Mini.

I mean, look at your nick - every 357wheelgunner needs a lever action to go with the collection...:)

Yeah, espeically since I can't reload a wheelgun fast enough... :) Another vote for 1894C.

At the price of a VEPR you could get TWO Saiga's, one in 5.56 and one in .308 (or 5.45x39, 7.62x39, .410 and 12 gauge) The 16" models are averaging about 1.5MOA. Nice straight stock, so not too EBR'ish if this is a problem. And if you are a tinkerer you can go convert to pistol grip, fancy them up, etc.

Check out www.saiga-12.com for info on the Saiga's in various calibers.

Marlin lever gun. Gotta have a matching lever for each 6-gun caliber in your collection. The Rossi/EMF 1892 carbines might be worth checking out, too.
