Hi everyone, I hope this is an ok place to put this post.

I have recently been purchasing a few rifles, and now want to get better cleaning tools for them. I grew up using a simple hoppes kit to clean firearms with my dad, and have read that the screw together rods and such might not be quite up to par in terms of the keeping my firearms accurate long term.

I want to get some input on what I should be looking for, and brands. I would like to get nice stuff, but of course $ is always an issue.

I will be cleaning:

.17 hmr CZ 452
.22 Marlin 60
.22 Buckmark handgun
.223 Tikka T3
.243 Kimber 84m

Any thoughts on what would work for me? Can I use the 17 hmr rod to clean the 22's?

Thanks!!

Tipton rods, Dewey brushes, Possum bore guides, MPro cleaning products, and Wilson Combat oil and grease.

Agree with ARLover. Get good stuff, you only have to buy it once. Boresnakes are OK for quick cleaning, but not (IMHO, IME) very durable or effective. I have Tipton rods that get used weekly but look brand new - and they are 15 years old.

I buy everything from Dewey, IMHO they are some of the best. Also they are US made, and I prefer to buy American made products when I can.

Everything you will need.
As was said, buy quality, you'll only have to buy once, and your barrel will love you for it.

1 piece stainless steel rod, brass jags, nylon brush, chamber guide, bore guide IF you have a firearm you need to clean from the muzzle, patches, copper solvent, regular solvent, and I recommend Brownells 'Rust Preventive No.2 oil for the outside and the inside, barrel too, as a protectant only, and Mil-Comm Tw25 grease and Mil-Comm MC2500 lubricating oil, these last 3 items are what the majority of the manufactures use when the firearm leaves the factory.

For your bolt guns a rod guide is a must. I am partial to Dewey products (guide, rod, jags, and patches).

Yes, a .17 rod will also work on the .22. You may need to get a thread adapter.

Eezox is great for a final wipe down.

Thanks everyone

So it looks like 2 rods, a 17/20 for the .17 and .223 and a .22-.26 for the .243.

Then, I am a bit confused. For the bore guides, do I need a specific one for each gun, or are there some that will work in a number of different calibers. Also, do I need anything for the muzzle?

Any suggestions for the Marlin, since i have to clean from the Muzzle? Or, could I just use a boresnake for it?

Your Marlin M60 (IMHO) will need the action cleaned way more than the bore. I usually just run a wet patch in my .22 rimfire firearms, followed a few minutes later by a dry patch.

One other item that helps immensely with cleaning is Q tips. I buy the big boxes when they are on sale. Q tips are great for applying liquids and removing same, especially in tight spots. :D
