I'm new and I have a 642 with the stock UM boot grips and just can't get a good hold on it. After lots of searching I'm split between Pachmayr compac pro or PGS hideouts textured with finger-grooves.

I want to be able to pocket carry and don't want to spend a lot. What would you guys suggest?

Thanks if advance.:)

I put some Uncle Mikes combat on my 60. I found that I liked them better than the Pachmyr. Just a tad larger but it doesn't bother me for carry.

I have had Pachmayrs, Hogues and Uncle Mikes. I think the Pachmayrs do a great job of absorbing recoil but they feel like like they're pregnant. Too fat. The Hogues are great because they pretty much force your hand into a consistent grip every time you grab them, but they don't do much for recoil. Most of them have an open back. The Hogue Bantam grip is a great design but they would not stay attached and kept trying to walk off the gun. (No screws, slip on) The Uncle Mike's are now on all my carry revolvers. They are the best compromise I have found. (in affordable grips) I also think they are the ugliest grips I have ever seen, but the do the intended job well.

I love my Compacs. The covered back strap makes a world of difference in shooting comfort, but they're still a good size for pocket carry, unlike a Hogue Monogrip (comfy but HUGE).

Good luck!

I would also recommend the Uncle Combat grips. You can buy them from the S&W website. They are a little longer but still fit in my front pocket and the have a covered back strap.

Four J Frames.
Four with Pachmayr Compacs.
Small enough for pocket carry.
No fabric grab.
Covered back strap.
The older ones without the logo are slimmer.
The slot for the pinky lines them up
the same way in your hand every time.
After so many years of experimenting with
Uncle Mike's Boot Grips, Spegels, Bantams
and Safariland/Rogers, I went back to
Pachmayr Compacs.

I had all but given up on this post and yesterday ordered Pachmayr Compac Pros (no backstrap cover). Thanks for all the replies.

I'll write back next week on what I think about them. I didn't know about the UM combat, so they'll be on the list if I don't like the Compac Pro.

I'm not too recoil sensitive, but just looking for a more consistant grip. I could not grip the way I wanted and pull the trigger well with the boot grips.

If you find the Pach's too sticky for pocket carry, you still might want to try the Hideouts, they're pretty inexpensive. Remember that you'll have to modify them if you use speed loaders.

I got my Pachmayr Compac Pro grips yesterday. Overall, I like it. Not a huge change from the UM Boot grips, but just enough to make the gun point better and it positions my hand for more consistent, controlled trigger pulls. Just on dry-firing I can tell there is improvement.

The Pachmayr a little longer, but seems less bulbous that the UM boot grips. I think it works well in my pocket and not near as stickyas the UMs.

The real test will be at the range.
