Instead of dealing with the potential problems which would come with shooting or trapping the pesty, smelly home invader, try this: Convince him to leave on his own by liberally applying fox or coyote urine around the area where he has taken up residence. It is easy obtainable where trapping supplies or deer hunting cover scents are found.
It worked at my hunting lease this past fall when a skunk had decided to move in under the camp next to mine. The smell was always there, for weeks, and my buddies and I were intending on shooting it first chance we got, even though we knew that there was a good chance of it "releasing" upon being shot, and probably having the smell be worse for a while. Luckily, before we did the deed, another member of the club, an eighty year old man who is still an avid hunter, took care of the problem with the above mentioned method. Us "youngsters" learned a lesson.
