Help me pick a new woods sidearm...

I much prefer a 4" model 64. I gave up on rugers decades ago as I don't care for their triggers or actions. It's pretty darn hard to beat a good old smith & wesson.

What about a 3-inch Ruger sp101? Much lighter, trimmer on the belt, yet still capable of full-power .357 ammo, and pleasant with the .38.

Thanks guys. Lots of great suggestions. Deciding on a new gun is really fun (for me, anyway).

Look at a S&W 60-4, it is a tank of a little handgun...

See... I wasn't even aware of those. Very very cool. It will be on my "must-acquire" for sure.

any ol smith 10,15,64-ruger security /service six...
I'm leaning in this direction for the "new" farm/woods beater though. While Christmas shopping I was in "the" local Jewelry store talking with the owner, he noticed a pistol rug under my arm (I had picked-up a repair around the corner), and inquired, we got talking guns and he took me back to his vault and showed me a half-dozen guns of he's bought from another downtown merchant who was going out of business years back. Among them was a 1961 Winchester 94 NIB! (sn 24783XX), and a S&W model 10-8 (sn 523XX early 1970's), and they're for sale. The M10 even had a interesting local story to go along with it.

Two questions: Can I shoot +P occasionally out of the venerable old S&W and Ruger six-series .38s? Is there a date line not to cross?

And... What should I expect to pay for the M10 I described above? It's supposedly a police duty weapon, so its visible condition is "considerable holster-wear"...

Thanks,
Les

S&W do not recommend PlusP in guns made before 1957. Steel framed guns with a model number stamped in them should be fine with PlusP, as it is only a 10% pressure increase over the standard .38 special loads.
Aluminum framed guns are a different matter, unless specifically recommended by S&W I would not load PlusP rounds in one.
AFAIK there is no difference between the .38 special and .357 magnum Ruger Speed Six/ Security Six steel, so use of PlusP will be fine.

+P+ ammunition does not have an industry pressure rating and could even be at .357 magnum pressures. Such ammo is best left for guns chambered for the .357 magnum.

You're on the right track here.

Like MCgunner, I never leave myself in a position to not harvest some pork when it presents itself.
The piney woods also have lots of rattlesnakes, another delicious varmint with a beautiful hide to boot.

I would (and do) use something that's able to make use of both 38 and 357 mag for a woods gun since a woods gun is more of a "come what may" type accoutrement.

GP100 is generally a better choice. They're inexpensive, rugged, DA, and can be tricked out if you're the type who likes to farkle things. And, if you're not they work fine left alone.

I like single action revolvers too, but most people don't seem to like them for anything but a novelty nowadays.

Thanks guys... So this is where your suggestions led me...

I sold one of my two Taurus Judges today for $400.

I bought a police-trade S&W M64 4" in beautiful shape with Pachmayr grips as my new "woods gun", for $325.

And, um, since I had $ left over... :) ...this particular shopping expedition also led to the local acquisition of my first Beretta 92FS, mid-90s USA mfg, as new with blue plastic box, looks never fired, for $400... :D

I'll still keep a GP-100 on my list, but I'll probably buy a 6"bbl... Sometime this year...

Thanks for all the input, I'm happy, my wife's happy, life is good.
