So I ordered a Remington model 700 sps tactical in .308 last week and need to get a scope for it. I have a couple of the Leupold VXIII 6.5-20 LR scopes and love them. I'm thinking of either getting another one of these scopes, or a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 LR, maybe with the illuminated recticle. It will be used primarily for shooting paper from 5-600 yards, but it may also replace my .338 win mag for deer hunting. I have some .22 centerfires, and then the .338 win mag which is a little bit of overkill for Michigan deer. My shots are between 50-100 yards on deer. The .338 win mag has a Vari-X II 4-12 on it that replaced the VXII 2-7 that was on it. I don't need the 4.5-6.5 more magnification at such short ranges, but it would be nice to go above the 14x to 20x. What do you suggest?

codybrown,
You don't say what your price range is. However, I will offer my .02. Do yourself a favor and get a Nightforce. Reticle selection is great and they are one of the most durable scopes made. I have the 3.5x15x56 with the NP-R2 reticle and love it. I know of a person who has the 3.5x15x50 on his 300 RUM and he lets a friend use it to shoot roos out to 800 yards. If you shoot consistently beyond 600 yds, I would consider the 5.5x22. I own a Leupold and they are a good scope, but don't compare to the Nightforce in my opinion. I'm also from Mich.

How about this:

652165MD Bushnell 2.5-16x50 Elite 6500 30mm Rifle Scope
Matte
Mil-Dot
30mm
Side Focus
Rainguard
$779.95

The zoom range is good for deer hunting and target shooting. They also come in 2.5-16x42 and 4.5-30x50 flavors.

Well I was hoping to keep it under $600 which I can do with both the Leupolds that I am looking at. I have had problems with Bushnell before, so I'm staying away from them. I may look into the Nightforce scopes though. I have heard the name, but I am not familiar with their products.

codybrown, IMHO the super sniper I hang on my .308 is a 10x42m at a cost of 399.00 because of a side focus and as it's said always goe's back to perfect zero is the same for me everytime I change distances to inprove my skill in paper shooting can be found at swfa's web site lots of luck...and also have the 299.00 version without the side focus..

If I were you, that's what I'd do - stick with what works. But if I were me, and I think that I am, I'd look at Sightron S3s, Bushnell Elite 4200s, or Elite 6500s, on a moderately-high budget.

Wait a sec - hold up - what are you going to use the .308 for - is this your new deer rifle? If so, then bring back down the magnification.

the .338 win mag which is a little bit of overkill for Michigan deer

Ya think? Naaaaaahhhhh. :p :)

It may take the place of the .338 win mag for deed hunting. I love the .338 and shoot it extremely well, so I have been using that. Since I am getting the .308 for mostly paper punching, it could also serve as a more suitable caliber for shooting deer. I want to stay away from a fixed power scope. It has to be able to range from 50 yards out to longer distances for magnification. I don't take any shots at running game, so I'm not to worried about fast target acquisition. The question is, will the extra 2x of magnification between the 4.5 - 6.5 really be that noticeable on deer at 50-100 yards. I would be using the higher portion of the magnification range 98% of the time which weighs heavier that the small portion that it will be used for deer hunting. I know the extra 6x of power between 14-20 will make a lot of difference at long ranges as long as I don't run into mirage.

If you're shooting deer at 50 yards to 100 yards, 3x should be the absolute min but I'd prefer a 1.5 or 2.5 as the min in a variable scope.

I also love the 338 wm. I should have mentioned that my Nightforce is on my 338 wm (A-Bolt). It is going to Africa with me in less than 30 days. I had another scope on it and it started to flake off inside the scope. It also would not hold point of aim after about 500 rounds. Good luck on which ever scope you choose.

Two scopes.

A high magnification target scope and a low end variable for hunting.
Some sort of QD mount - I use Leupold QRW - and a few shots to check return to zero and you are in business.

I guess you could get the March 2.5-25X, but it is more expensive than two medium-high grade scopes of different powers.
