Just ordered a Weatherby 30-06 22" barrel Mark V lightweight from CDNN for only $699.99. Great price for a sweet gun I've wanted for a while. I'm thinking of going with a Leupold set up for the glass and mounts. Probably going to get a Vari-X III 3.5x10x40 or 3.5x10x50 for better field of view. Mounts and rings will most likely be two-piece and dual dovetail for simplicity and smooth lines. This will be a "go to" gun for pretty much any hunting in North America but mostly in the Northeast as a bush gun (hence the 22" barrel and 3.5 low end magnification on the scope.)

Can you guys recommend a better set up for me?

Thanks in advance!

Kev,
I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I have a 5 panel Lazermark in .30-06 that wears a Vari-X III 3.5-10x50. I don't think you could go wrong with that combo;)

Nice deal on the gun. Personally I would have went with a .270, but that's just me. If you've got the money then Leupold would be great. The sizes you mentioned would be good. If you want something a little cheaper you might look into the Simmons Pro 50 in 2.5-10x50.

The 50MM is a pretty big and heavy scope. I, personally, never felt the need for optics larger than 40MM (Hell many of my rifles have 2.5X20 scopes on them). You also pay a lot more for the 50. Plus, do you really need a 10X scope on an '06? Planning on 1,000 yard shots? That 3.5 minimum magnification will make it harder to use up close, too. I have an '06 with a 2-7 Bausch & Lomb and it works great. I really think you're looking at too much scope. But if the 3.5-10X50 is what you like then you don't our permission.

Yeah, but there is just something about that gold ring on top of the Weatherbys that just warms my hart...swoon....:D

do you really need a 10X scope on an '06
It's not always a question of need- I never NEEDED a Corvette....
