I'd like to buy myself a bolt action rifle in .223 (I really want to use my once fired 5.56 nato brass if that makes a difference). The ideal rifle would cost me $500 or less (and hopefully include a scope?). Oh yeah, and I'd like to be available in a left-hand model. (although not completely necessary)

Any and all advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Have a good one,
Dave

heavy barreled varminter? sporter weight? medium contour?

long barrel? short?

what is the rifle's intended purpose?

Where can I find info on the CZ 527?

I'd love to have a heavy barrel but I didn't know if I could get into something like that given my price range. What I'd be using it for primarily is varmits and paper punching at 200 yards or less. (usually 100 yards).

Thanks again,
Dave

I saw the new Savage "accu-trigger" adjustable trigger bolt guns in .223 at last weeks guns show for $420 with scope. If they had one in .30-06 I'd have brought it home.

I've a Weatherby Vangaurd in .223 with synthetic stock that is a great shooter, Cost $400 w/o scope, mount and rings. Weatherby is probably the most accurate out of the box in your price range, but they heat up fast so aren't so good for rapid fire.

I doubt you can get into bull barrel or "varmeteer" guns for much under $600 without scope.

Thanks guys!! Doesn't look like the CZ527 is available in a LH model, but other than that it looks real promising.

I'm a lefty, and I really love the CZ527, but maybe that's because I don't do a lot of standing shots with mine. But, if you practice enough, you shouldn't feel handicapped shooting a rh action if you are lefty. Here's a pic of my Varmint Laminate and my best target. I haven't done any modifications to the rifle, it's set trigger breaks at about 1.25lbs, and cost me $575.

Yeah, I'm trying to develop some skill with a rifle. Offhand I'm just plain terrible and I haven't been working on my positions as much as I should but hopefully this year will be the year. (my shooting range is finally finished! :) )

That's an impressive target. I think even from a bench I couldn't shoot anywhere near that good. It's sad when you're more confident at 50 yards with a 4 inch pistol than you are with a rifle. :)

fwiw the gunshop closest to me is selling rem 700 adl's for $329. these are new in sealed boxes. might be something to consider...

A Tikka T3 Lite with its stainless barrel, synthetic stock, and adjustable trigger will set you back under five hundred but sans scope. Great shooting rifle and advertised 1MOA accuracy but you should be able to shoot even better off a bench or bipod. Not sure about the left handed part though.

Wally-
No, the gun will not be $575 with a scope, but you can get the walnut stock instead of the laminate and pay about a hundred less, making it $475 before the scope.

The CZ, nice rifle, and nice shooting!
Both the Varmint laminate, and Varmint kevlar look real good to me.
Maybe some day. :D

Dmftoy1;

I'm also left handed. I'm also amazed at how many here can blithely ignore your request to be presented with the LHB options available. I also am exactly where you are, searching for a .223 LHB gun.

Here's what I found. Charles Daly, which is actually a Zastava Mauser. This is the mini-Mauser action which was imported by Interarms several years ago.

Savage, with acu-trigger.

Within your stated price parameters, these are the only two I found. Remington lists the mdl 700 VS in left, but at an MSRP of over $870.00. Winchester would be a custom shop option & therefore very much more than where you want to be on price.

If you want to take the time, there are used LHB's available. I'd search both the GunsAmerica and Gunbroker websites. However, finding what you want at the price you wish to pay may take some time.

The Daly online catalogue currently shows the Superior Grade as the only model available at $629.00 MSRP. I'm sure that the actual retail price will be lower. My dealer says that the Field Grade is due to show up soon & I have one of these on order with them.

The CZ's are supposedly very good guns. I wouldn't know, they don't make guns for me & I don't make my money available to them because of it. I've come to the conclusion that if we reward the firearms makers for not providing us with what we want by buying a right hand gun, we'll never get what we want. And with the common use of CNC machining, there's no real reason for them to fail to provide more LHB product.

I've shot a lot over the years, quite a bit of it with RHB's. I'm old & crotchety enough now to insist that I get what I want, the way I want it, or I keep my money. Now that I do have a battery of LHB's, I much prefer it that way, thank you very much.

For those that think I'm just being difficult about refusing the right hand action guns, talk to me after you've gone on your trophy elk hunt & used a gun that doesn't fit you. If you'd just as soon pass on the experience, stop trying to force it on us lefty's.

Thanks! That's some good advice. I will keep my eyes peeled. I'm not in a huge hurry as I just bought my AR in November and as I accumulate a pile of empty brass I'd like to be able to feed it to something else. (the XM193 stuff is so cheap that I'll buy it for the AR).

I can work a RHB pretty well if there's no scope on it, but when you throw a scope on I can't work the bolt with my left hand so I have break my cheek weld, etc.

Have a good one,
Dave
