I've narrowed it down to two.

FN SPR A1 24" chrome lined - $1,600

Rem 700 SS 24" 5R Milspec - $1,100

Mainly used for range duty and deer hunting. Weight not an issue. I do go to the gym on a frequent basis.

FNH SPR A1. Think about what you're getting. McMillian stock, chromed barrel, DBM (if you're into those), CRF, 3 position safety, and a steel (Near?) 20 MOA scope base.

If you order from taccord.com they'll even throw in a full bedding job for free. If you're a Sniper's Hide member, you might can get it like I did for $1300!!

It's a steal at that price!

Hell, I'd become a member of the communist party to get a deal like that!

I am not familiar with the Remington, and I am sure it is a fine rifle, but I do love my FN SPR. Bought it slightly used.

I bought one of about 650 of the then new 1st Generation FN SPR's that were built. Great rifle, but they didn't come with a McMillan stock. So when Kelly McMillan was looking for someone to test and evaluate a new prototype stock he was developing, I volunteered. Naturally, I had him make it for my FN SPR. The stock later became the A5, and here is the review that I wrote about it.

I have honestly been leaning toward the FN for some time now for all the reasons you guys have one. The only thing that's had me on the fence has been some fantastic results reported by owners of 700's with the 5R barrel. Either way, I'll be ordering one or the other tomorrow.

P.B Walsh, I've tried calling taccord.com but haven't been able to reach a live person yet. I think I need to talk to them before making my final decision.

I'd love to hear from some of the members here that have shot the 700 5R. Is it really that good, or just LGS hype

I prefer the Winchester action on a hunting rifle. Under harsh, outdoor conditions they will be more rugged and reliable. But on a pure target rifle I still think you are more likely to get a tiny bit more accuracy from a Remington, at least out of the box. A local gunsmith and friend is into competition and swears by the 5R. He has some pretty impressive targets framed in his shop with the 700 5R.

But this one is just too close to call for me. Based on the fact that the FN comes with a much better stock, and a slight bias, I'd probably lean slightly toward the FN

I'm a hunter who enjoys shooting so that last tiny bit of accuracy just isn't that important to me. I had one of the FN rifles for a while that I intended for dual roles as both a hunting and informal target shooting. Mine came with 20" barrel and the Hogue stock which I replaced with B&C.

It was a good shooter, but no better than other rifles I owned that were 2-3 lbs lighter. It became expendable.

Weight is always an issue on a hunting rifle. I go to the gym frequently too. Every person who I know that insists on the lightest weight rifle possible are also the ones in the best condition. They lift weights and condition in order to get into the mountains. Once there they leave every ounce possible at home. I can carry a 10 lb rifle around in the mountains, I just don't feel the need to prove how tough I am and do it.

JMR40, you make good points.

Weight, however, is not a concern for me. Where I do most of my hunting, I'm driving my Kawasaki mule to a box blind and climbing a ladder. I do 2-3 hunts a year in south Louisiana where a 1/2 mile trek through the swamp is called for, and for that I have my Browning BLR .358

And since most of the use will be range duty, a little heavier is better, particularly in the barrel. I will be doing a lot of load development with it.

The "I go to the gym" comment was tongue I cheek. It seems whenever anyone talks about weight of the rifle there's always a comment about "you need to work out more" lol!

If I was hunting in Colorado and climbing mountains I can assure you I'd be looking for a mountain rifle.

It's a done deal. Stepped up to the FN SPR A2 with fluted barrel. Thanks P.B. Walsh, I got it through the guys you recommended. They are bedding the action for free.

Lord help me when Mrs. Nature finds out.

Nice write up USSR.

PB Walsh, please post pictures when you get it. What scope will you be using?

I will. Scope will not be for a while, but it will hopefully be a Bushnell 3-12x42mm LRHS. Gotta save some more money for a quality optic.

Should be here next week, calling Wednesday or so to see about it.
