I've got a question. I'm getting a new gun and my grandfather might be able to get a good deal on a new mossburg pump action. Are they good guns. Should I get one? This is a 20 gauge by the way.

Any help is appreciated

I own a Mossberg 500 and my son owns a Remington 870, both are great shotguns. If you can get a good deal on a Mossberg jump on it and I'm sure you won't regret it.

i have a mossberg 500a and love it. when i got it the part inside the trigger assembly that allows you to pump and get another shell in chamber was broken. replaced whole assembly and runs like a champ. home defense or field gun?

Been using a Mossberg 500 in 20ga. for at least 20 years as my main shotgun. Not a problem.

As has been stated previously, both are good guns. It really comes down to a matter of personal preference as to which one you will like best. FWIW, I own a couple of each, and none of them have let me down.

I'm a "Mossberg Guy"; I have run a Maverick 88 since 1990 or so without any issues. Recently restored late Father-In-Laws OLD 500A.

Both go BOOM! on request, every time.

I like the look and feel of the 'Classic' Rem 870 Wingmaster, but the Mossberg "fits" me better.

Mossberg fan here! I like the controls over other shotguns. Go play w/ one and see if you like it.

I like the price of mossberg's better than 870's(not much overall)... that being said I like the sights on my 870 (fiber optic), better than a comparable mossberg and thats why I bought my 870 instead. So as others have said, it's purely matter of choice. Both will serve you and your grandkids well.

have an 835 that I bout 6 or 7 yrs ago, love it! Look ing at getting a 500 very soon in 20 with the 28'' and the 18'' barrels....

I love the controls as well. The tang safety and action bar release behind the trigger are more user friendly. If you plan on using a pistol grip in the future, go with Remington, the cross bolt safety works best for that.

Mossberg is a great shotgun. The reassembly of the bolt/ carrier during a complete cleaning is a bit more cumbersome compared to an 870, but it is quickly learned. Since you don't have to perform this task very often (with either the Mossberg or 870) this really isn't an issue.

My opinion is that you will really enjoy the Mossberg if you don't allow true-blue 870 owners to taint your pride of ownership.

Please don't put a pistol grip on it, or any pump shotgun for that matter.
