Here's the deal... My wife is in college. She is in Writing right now and has an assignment for an Argumentative Essay on Gun Control. She needs substantial citation on this issue, with the obvious prediliction that we have for the correct side of this issue... (We can find the opposing opinion citation in a local rag)

If you have any statements or references that you feel are particularly appropriate or should be included in this minor work, they would also be appreciated.

Her disposable email address for school puposes is TLJ2013_yahoo.com. (replace underscore with @ )
OR
You can PM all offerings directly to me
OR
You can post them here and I will collect and forward as appropriate.

She would like to have as cogent an arguement as possible as this is an assignment provided in a decidedly anti-gun environment, but we don't have months to gather all of the very best info that is available... Perhaps this is an opportunity to win a few hearts and minds...

Tough assignment. Wish I had some direct reference material for you. Check out crime statistics in Chicago before and after limiting gun ownership. There are numerous books on WWII / Hitler. There should be plenty of info on line. Years ago I did a speech on roughly the same topic. I got a C+. Several classmates said it was a great speech. However, it was a very liberal college! (Most of them are!)
Good luck and good writing!

I'd recomend siting some stories from the Armed Citizen section of "American Hunter" mag. In terms of statisticts it's not useful but I've found that the bleeding heart type liberals often get soft for individual's stories.
Minnesota changed the CCW laws in 2003-2005 and there were people convinced it would become the wild west but the crime rate has been stable irregardless that the number of people that now have permits went way up since 2005. I looked a bit but could not find anything regarding that.
Good luck

Sure, here you go;

http://www.debate.org/debates/That-we-should-ban-guns-in-urban-areas/1/

A pretty good debate that took place at debate.org. The pro-gun won it by a landslide :D Might be something useful in there.

Google "nationmaster" or "statemaster" for current crime statistics if you need them.

These guys are pretty cool if you're looking for something that you can cite. http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp

Here's one for the argument and counter-arguments from jfpo http://jpfo.org/filegen-a-m/data-docs.htm

Lemmie know if you need anymore, good luck

Are the arguments in the essay policy arguments or legal arguments? If you need legal arguments against gun control, you might advise her to look at the seminal gun rights Supreme Court case, DC v. Heller. There is no better authority than the Supreme Court itself.

There is some policy in there as well, but its mostly legal (as you would expect). In terms of policy, there is mention of how violent crime rose substantially during the 30+ years that DC had a handgun ban.

Also, the Glenn Beck book "Arguing With Idiots" has a chapter dedicated to this subject. I think it is written in a bullet point format.

Do a Google search for Klech and guns. You will find some good articles about how often firearms are used in SD every year and more.

There was an a topic much like this one not long back. A search will likely provide you with that thread (and others) with good info and sources.

What is here general thesis? That might help you get a better answer and a little more help. Is she refuting an existing article or just writing her own persuasive/argumenative piece?

Find out if the prof wants scholarly works. An essay based on advocate web sites might not fly.

If you want scholarly references:

1. Search on Kleck - Point Blank - older but award winning book.
2. Lott - but remember some folks think he fudged things. Does the prof know that?
3. Two pro book:

Gun Control and Gun Rights - MClurg, Kopel and Denning - NYU Press
- a very nice pro and con book on the high level by a university press.

Can Gun Control Work - Jacobs - Oxford University Press.

Again, remember that profs may not buy web site as primary sources, if by advocacy groups. There is plenty of pro literature around. Glenn Beck is not an original source.

Data base searches in criminology (social science) can bring up the debates. If this is a research paper - pro gun me would flunk you with just web and political commentator rhetoric.

Thanks Folks! You rock. she is busily typing away at this now, and ya'll have made hunting down the material SOOO much easier for her. I really appreciate it.

If she would like some anecdotal things to put in her paper look up Kennesaw, Georgia. Adults are required by local law to own and maintain a firearm if they live there. An antis worst nightmare, however there have been no problems with accidental or rage shootings. Also crime is quite low. It's interesting to compare to a city with a gun ban.
