I purchased from an online site this flint lock .45cal muzzle loading pistol. Designed for .440 patched balls. The only markings on the pistol are "black powder only" "Made in Italy" and the serial number 042315. There is some other marks Under the black powder only only half visable. "UIKAP" ?? I can only make out the upper half of the letters.

What is the general "style" of this pistol. Not a kentucky or plains pistol. What style would you call it?

Not much, but might be of help:

your "UIKAP" looks more like "JUKAR" to me.

Edit: quick Google search finds "JUKAR" to be a Spanish company that made BP guns back in the '70s. they were distributed by several companies, including CVA. I'm guessing your pistola is one of these. Quality was supposed to be good, although some were better than others. Don't know if they're still in business or not.

Made in Spain

Yeah, now that you flogged the memory circuit. When I removed the barrel looking for more information, I found the "made in spain" logo. So JUKAR and or CVA? Sounds more reasonable. I suspect this was a "kit" but don't know more than that. Hoping someone recognizes it and is able to provide more info.

Thanks.

It shoots,,,, However....

I've shot this once. The hammer spring is very weak. The frizzen spring is very strong. Makes for really poor sparks getting into the pan.

I assume I can purchase new springs and get it to snap properly.

The barrel has NO Sights.

Is this normal for this type of pistol? Were they normally soldered on or how does one go about fitting some type of aiming device to this. I don't think Picatinny rail and red dot sight would go over well at a buckskin rendezvous.

That pistol looks like the old CVA Tower Pistol. You might try getting a replacement lock from L&R locks(google search)to see if you can get a more reliable lock. Or see if you can get a replacement spring some where. As far as sights you could easily drill for a bead front sight. I have a CVA Plains pistol that didn't have a rear sight and I had a dickens of a time trying to hit anything with it. I made my own dovetail with a triangular file and taped in a basic muzzleloader rear sight. It was a lot of work but now I can hit what I aim at. However, it had an octogon barrel I don't know how making your own dovetail would work on that round barrel. My point is don't dispair you can make almost any inexpensive gun into a real shooter with a little extra cash and some elbow grease.

You can probably find a replacement hammer spring, or have one made easily enough. Perhaps a smith could even retemper your original spring, which would be a lot easier and cheaper. To reduce the frizzen spring just requires a little judicious stoning and polishing where it contacts the spring. If you have a smith redo your hammer spring, have him tune the frizzen also, unless you can handle that part yourself. If the folks at Big Iron are taking in new work now, I bet they could set you up in no time. They could probably come up with sights for you too.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out! I've always liked those pistols.
