I am a new reloader and am trying to get my wilson case trimmer up and running. I just received it. Looks very nice and very well built. I am starting with once fired .45-70 brass. I believe I have everything to get started.

Wilson trimmer
Sinclair Mount
.45-70 Fired case holder
45 degree deburring attachment

So.. my problem is that I cannot seem to get the thing adjusted properly so that I can set it and cut all my brass to the same length. What is the trick to setting this thing up properly? The instructions are pretty vauge. I looked at my manuals and each say that 45-70 brass should be no longer than 2.105. So.. what length should I be cutting the cases to? Will all the cases need triming or only some of them?

I am having another problem.. I full length sized and decapped all my brass using my rockchucker. When I put the sized brass in the wilson case holder, the brass willl spin and not allow the toolhead to cut. I must be doing somthing wrong or I am just a plain ole idiot ha ha..

Anyone that uses a wilson trimmer please help. I am a new guy just trying to read, remember and learn everything that I can.

Thanks
Jeff

So.. staright walled cases dont need trimming?

Usually, but not always. The .30 Carbine is a case that needs to be trimmed each and every time you reload it. Yes, there is a slight taper to the case, but most guys consider it a straight wall case due to the lack of a shoulder.

Hi MIdoublegun,

Your problem with the cases spinning lies in the case holder itself. You have a
'fired brass' case holder and it is too large in ID to retain the full length sized brass. You can remedy the problem by trimming your prior to full length resizing. The Wilson tool is very easy to use. I used one for decades to trim, ream primer pockets, ream inside necks, and turn outside necks.

So checkout the fit between a fired case and a resized case and you will see what I am referring to.

I trust that this will help you.

Try placing the case in the holder, then pop the case head on a piece of wood to drive it in tighter. After trimming is done, drop a wood dowel in the case mouth and pop it again to remove the case.
