Dear THR Members:

My daughter and I are having considerable difficulty locating high quality kennels with lab puppies for adoption. After considerable efforts, we thought, where better to turn for help than THR...hunting...for hunting dogs! Our daughter loves hunting for pheasants, and of course her favorite part is handling the dog(s). She enjoys it so much that we have decided to adopt our own hunting dog.

We are looking for a male, black Labrador Retriever puppy to train up for hunting. While we prefer a black Lab, we are willing to take a chocolate, silver or white (order of preferences). We prefer to adopt a puppy in the 7 to 10 weeks of age range so we have ample time to bond with it early on. We live in SE Michigan, and prefer not to travel more than 500 to 600 miles (one-way) for the adoption. We prefer to adopt ASAP to allow ample time to house-train the puppy over the summer.

Specifically, we are asking for your knowledge here. Do any of you have first-hand knowledge of any high-quality kennels in your area, or in any area near us? If you do, please contact us either via PM here at THR, or post the information here in this thread if you have information about any kennels that have excellent quality labs for hunting. Tomorrow we will be posting a picture of Morgan's brand new Remington 870 Express, youth model 20 gauge that we bought for hunting. We just bought it for her tonight at Dunhams. Needless to say, she is pretty excited about the whole package...new shotgun and now the puppy search.

Appreciatively yours,

Doc & Daughter

Doc2005,

Take this for what it's worth, but I've been searching across the country for my next lab. Hopefully by this time next year I'll be a proud homeowner with a new pup runnin' around. I've been itching for another black lab almost ever since I had to give my sweetheart of a female to my brother when I moved here almost 8 years ago now :(. (dang apartment living!)

So far in my search it's been mainly online, but as it gets closer to the time to get my next lab I'll start visiting the breeders personally. I do work for an airline, so travel for meetings and adoption will be easy for me. I think this might be outside your stated 5-600 mile range though. She is very, very high on my list and definately the first shot at my business. Again, FWIW, I'm still looking and researching but this might be of interest to you.

Thank-you from both of us. I have heard of them...they must be good. We will check into them.

Update:

Thanks all who replied. Morgan logged in this morning and located a kennel in Michigan, Weavers, and they had a chocolate female, named "Cocoa". So, we dicussed prices, $550.00 with full breeding rights. We made the 1 hour and 30 minutes drive this morning and adopted the latest member of the family. She is a little cutie. We will post pictures as soon as we can. Morgan is very pleased. Come to find out, she actually preferred a female and when she saw the chocolate color, it stuck in her heart! :)

Thanks all. Pics will follow as soon as we have time.
