$1500 is the perfect price range for a Fusion. You could probably find a used Baer for that price too, but I'd personally rather have a totally custom built new gun for the same price.

I have 2 Fusions, a 10mm longslide and a Bobtail Commander 45 ... and love them both. Just for reference I also have a Wilson CQB and a Brown Kobra Carry. I'd put them both as equals to the Fusion, none I would say exceed others in terms of quality. The only real difference is the Fusions are totally custom, and hundreds less.

I am no expert, so I can only attest to my experiences with the 1911s.

My first recomendation is STI. I bought a STI Trojan in 45acp and it is my carry/range/target gun. I have got about 800 rounds through it so far and no malfunctions. The only weak side of my Trojan in the factory coating, what looks to be a matte bluing. It is thin and wears off quickly. The Trojan rusts easily when exposed to the rain. I had mine cerramakoted by Predator Custom in Knoxville, TN and they did an excellent job. The Trojan runs around $1,000. I have had several gunsmiths tell me that STI's 1911s are on par with the higher end semi-customs. My friend shot mine and two weeks later he went and bought the other one the gun shop had.

My second recomendation would be a Wilson Combat CQB, but thats out of your price range probably. I currently own one and I like it, but it doesnt beat my STI.....I am still trying to figure out what my STI has that my CQB doesnt.....but oh well. The CQB is some fine craftsmanship, the slide to frame fit is near perfect and smooth as glass.

Springfield armory makes some good stuff. I have owned a SA loaded model that was very nice. I have owned a SA MC Operator 1911 that was very accurate.

Dan Wesson is churning out some excellent 1911s. I have not heard anything bad about them. My first 1911 was a DW Pointman 2 minor that would shoot anything you fed it and was decently accurate. I wish I never sold it.

I cant recommend Kimber due to my bad experience with their firearms and their customer service, sorry.
I also will not recommend any charles daly 1911 for the same reason.

I owned a Les Baer Monolith custom a while back. I never carried it, and only shot 100 rounds through it. The Les Baers are extrememly tight (slide to frame fit), but they are also extremely accurate. They are too tight for my taste though.

I hope this helps you out.

Go to GunsAmerica. Select advanced search. Type in 1911. Look down and right for the min/max windows for price. Put in your price range. Hit search. That will give you some idea of the range of guns in your price range.

I bought a SA Black Stainless Target and a S&W1911PD Commander with CT grips for around $1,000 a few years ago. I'd probably go Dan Wesson or S&W today for a full size or Commander. All steel for the range. The scandium frame is nice for carry.

I moved up to a Les Baer PII in .45 and 9mm. Also bought an Ed Brown Exec Target. The Brown and the .45 PII were used, lnib. Very nice used guns. Not sure how much you shoot or if you reload. The cost of the gun really is not the major investment if you are shooting much.

boy,are you in luck

there are two guns at the very bottom of the pricing scale that offer everything you want--price, style and quality. the first is the kimber royal II, all blue, all kimber and all of about $700 from rrarms.com. the other is the sti spartan. it's a 5" gun with all the cool stuff for LESS than $700, from proguns and others. let's do the math, $1500 to spend minus $800 to put the gun in your hands equals $700 to do some fancy-dancy custom work, making it one of a kind. (i would buy the STI, because none of your friends has one.)

stop the presses...

i have just found you another one. i just read a test on the new armscor/rock island armory 5" 1911. it looks good, what with adjustable sights and all. said to be hand fitted in the custom shop, this one had no frame/slide play. it's blue with some very sharp polished wood grips. comes with two novak 8-round mags. it's the only $650 1911 that will shoot into 1.25" at 25 yards. and shoot into 1" with the right ammo. think about it, looks, quality and razor-sharp accuracy for $650 with two top-shelf magazines. the rock island armory FS Match, think about it.

Do yourself a favor. Shop hard and get yourself an Ed Brown.

I've owned Colts, Kimbers, Springfields, Les Baers, Wilson Combats & Ed Browns.

I got rid of everything except the Ed Brown Special Forces. I've got over 3000 trouble free rounds downrange with it.

Bob Serva and Fusion

I have a Fusion Bobtail 45 Commander. It is one hell of a firearm, my favorite. In 1911s I also have a Springer Longslide and a Springer 5' 9x23. I feel the Fusion is superior to both. Also Bob Serva previously owned Dan Wesson then sold it to CZ. So he, and the smiths that went with him, should get alot of the credit from the Dan Wesson lovers on here.
