Could someone please show me the difference between the narrow base gas tube and a regular one on a m1 garand. I have a 1942 SA M1 Garand serial # 974xxx and i was thinking about restoring it to original configuriation.
It would really help if someone posted pictures of what the difference is. I am sure it is self explanitory meaning "narrow base" ....But i am half a idiot and i need someone to show me like they would a 1st grader. Thanks in advance,
mbdolfin

mbdolfin - I don't have the quick answer, but you can find it, (and probably with pictures) by posting your request over at the CMP Discussion Forum - http://www.odcmp.org/new_forum/. I recall seeing a question similar to yours there recently.

mbdolfin,

The front sight on your M1 will take up the entire width of a narrow base gas cylinder. On later versions the base is wide enough to allow drifting of the front sight unit for easy mechanical zeroing. The sight base on a wide base, IIRC, is about 3/32" wider than the front sight unit itself.
