Help with my first AR?

Theres nothing wrong with DMPS for most shooters. Its a good gun when you look at bang for buck. Yes there are better rifles out there but your going to spend more for them. Another good one to look at is this one.

Olympic Arms K16 16 Bull Barrel

You can get it 650ish I get great groups out of it. At 100 yard you can cover 5 shot groups with a dime. Even using cheap ammo like PMC.

In the end its your money so get what you like. I have been selling guns for years. I have not had a DPMS come back with a problem and have sold truck loads of them.

Considering not only the number I saw with issues but also the number that other dealers I know had, I find this hard to believe.

Of course you also are suggesting the only brand I wold recommend LESS than a DPMS. Disregarding Blackthrone/hesse Oly Has got to be the absolute bottom of the barrel with DPMS being just slightly above them.

Are we in a time warp? Is it 1994 when Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, DPMS, and Olympic were the only real options?

S&W's M&P-15 line made properly assembled rifles with HPT/MPI bolts, and high quality small parts in the same prices as most Bushmaster & DPMS rifles. The M&P-15 Sport put all those features, less a dust cover & forward assist, on the market at a price that competes with with lowest end DPMS & Olympic rifles. Spikes tactical offers very well spec'd rifles for the same price as cosmetically similar DPMS offerings. There's also this little upstart company in SC called Palmetto State Armory. PSA's premium component line, which sells for the same money as DPMS mid tier stuff, is sourced from FNH-USA. The market has changed.

Yeah, and for $600-ish you can get a S&W M&P-15 Sport with a medium contour 1:8 5R bbl made by T/C Arms. You'll get better lower parts, and in house forged upper & lower receiver that have been properly hard anodized. You'll get the HPT/MPI bolt mentioned above in a carrier that uses the correct size gas screws which have been properly staked. You'll get a mil-spec receiver extension (aka buffer tube) with a properly staked castle nut as well.

You can get a new Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport in the neighborhood of $600. It has a 5R melonite coated barrel. 5.56mm chamber. There is nothing on the market that compares to that for the price. Put an scope on it, a pair of iron sights, or a red dot and you are ready to go. Seriously, take some time, use Google, and do your research. I don't own one....but if I was looking for yet another AR, it would get above average consideration before I spent my money. I am quite sure that S&W makes a CT compliant version.
You are correct. The S&W website has a whole sub section for CT, MA, MD, NJ, NY Compliant M&P-15 rifles. A compliant Sport model is amongst them. Just to be clear the Sport has a proper F height, F marked FSB; and a pretty beefy A2 style detachable rear sight is also included. You don't have to buy sights - the Sport is ready to shoot right out of the box.

Jamming issues. LOL

You know like the issues that killed servicemen in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. I don't think that's LOL

If everything is working perfectly you've got 360 rounds on full auto and its "M16 out" That can be about a half hour. Thats if your lucky enough to have a good one. Issues keep cropping up.

You really need to look into that more closely. It was more of a "Oh, these don't need cleaning" and "use this ill designed ammo" issue than it was a gun issue back in Vietnam.

These guns are famously reliable in modern times.

I don't type alot of brilliant stuff at 1203 AM, but I will probly always be leery of the platform. I m sure it works OK for most things.

There's nothing wrong with personally not liking something, even if the dislike, don't take this the wrong way please, is a bit illogical. Use what you trust and works for you instead. I also don't mean that the system can't be improved upon, but I strongly believe that it is a damn good gun. Given a little bit of simple maintenance it will perform exceptionally well. It kind of explains it's global popularity all these years.
