I've tried proofhouse but they only go up to 1978.

I'd really appreciate the help if somebody has a book that goes after 1978, nothing helps in searching the net.

Colt Commander - 70SC758XX
stainless

Colt Gold Cup - FN046XX
National match series 80 - blued

I'm going to take a look at them today as I would love to buy my first 1911.

I think I'm going to get hooked on the stainless all steel commander but from what I've read the gold cup national match is by in large the better shooter.

Any advice to a 1911 newb would be most welcome.

Many thanks for reading ;) :)

Can't help with the GC, but are you sure the Commander is stainless?

That s/n prefix would indicate an '83 or earlier build, and Colt didn't make them in stainless until later in the '80s. Are you certain it's not satin nickel or has been after-market hard chromed?

Thanks for the reply Oro.

I had a look at them both today. The combat commander isn't stainless but something else and from google pics I would stay it must be the 'satin nickel' you mentioned.

I can google a similar photo and put it up.

The Gold Cup NM is in great condition and I will take it. I like the weight and longer barrel.

I am tempted by the commander but the slide is very badly scratched by the slide release. I'm a 1911 newb (went the polymer route with a hk45 as my first .45acp) so this perhaps won't be explained in the correct terms.

It seems the owner rather than pivoting the barrel bushing to release the tension just pushed out the slide release lever from one side then pushed it up....scratching the slide badly.

Apart from that it's also in very good condition, guy needs the cash so is selling.

It's still EUR750, although due to the scratch talked it down to EUR700.

Gold Cup NM is EUR600, seems like a good price

Oro,

you will have to forgive my ignorance and perhaps give me some lessons on whether it is nickel or not. I don't know

the commander looks exactly like this (photo courtesy of 1911 forum)

except there is a rather bad/ugly scratch running across the stallion from the slide release having been pivoted upwards in an arc. It broke my heart looking at how badly it destroyed the beauty of the slide. :(

Tel: (860) 236-6311

Call Colt. I called them about a 1991 Commander I bought last year and they were able to tell me it was made in 1997. There was a bit of a wait time, but the person I spoke to was very nice. Use this number instead - Tel: 800-962-COLT

Thanks for the lesson gunnie and many thanks to you bannockburn for the dates.

I will put up some photos when I get the paperwork done, although the registration process/paperwork here is painfully long :(

I cannot wait to get my hands on my first 1911! I've a feeling I'm going to get addicted to collecting them
