Gold Cup National Match Series 70 and 80

Back in 1984 I purchased a new "Series 80 Colt Mark IV Gold Cup National Match" 1911. I've enjoyed owning this firearm through the years, but as I've spoken with folks about gold cups, I'm wondering what the difference is between a "Series 70" and "Series 80." Is it a difference in manufacturing quality, tolerances, or features? This may be old ground I'm covering, but I'm new to THR and based on what I see, believe I will get good info. If anyone has an info source to refer me to that would cover the various changes on Gold Cups down through the years, this would be welcome. Otherwise, any help you can pass along will be appreciated.

People are usually aware the the Series 80 comes with a firing pin blocking mechanism. The Series 70 has no such mechanism. A good smith like Wayne Novak can make the difference felt in the trigger pull unnoticeable.

Secondly, the hammers are different. The half cock stop is moved on the Series 80 which causes the hammer to rest at a much lower position. If it slips off the half cock it will not have enough energy to set off a primer.

The firing pin is also shorter on the Series 80 and has a half moon part which allows the firing pin block to move thru.

Possibly the collet bushing was removed between models.
