I have a Remington Model 12 that I love to fire, problem is to eject that last shell I obviously have to cock back the bolt and when you slide the bolt closed there is no way I know to decock it. You can't hold the trigger while you slide the bolt closed, the only way I know to decock it is to dry fire it, which I don't want to do on a rimfire much less one that is 80 years old. Is there something I'm missing? Surely there has to be a way to decock the Model 12.

I store my 22s on a gun rack in my room, I wouldn't want the action to get dust or anything else inside. Besides, even when I load up the new magazine I still have to cock the bolt forward, dry fire, and cock it back for the bolt to pick up the new round.

I sometimes hand-place a spent casing in the chamber before ramming the slide home the last time, then squeeze the trigger.

On the downside, a) if someone who doesn't know cracks back the bolt and peeks in, they make think the rifle is loaded/round-chambered and b) I often forget and am surprised by the old case that comes flying out when I next pick up the rifle and rack the slide.

I really don't think it will hurt it to dryfire it. I have two that have been dryfired a lot with no damage. Not all rimfires have a firing pin that protrudes far enough to peen the chamber face.

For example Ruger tells you the 10/22 is OK to dryfire in the manua lthat comes with the rifle.
