Help with S&W Model 10 2 INCH barrel

Dear fiends, I'm being offered a S&W Model 10-5 2 INCH barrel SN# 76486
Besides wondering the DOB, I was wondering what "D 15" engraved under the serial number means.
So 3 things in the crane read like this:

Model 10-5
76486
D 15

Emphasis on the D 15

It's an assembly number. Doesn't mean anything now but was used by the factory to keep certain parts together while the gun was being built.

Assembly number, or assemblers/fitters number.

It means nothing if you didn't work at S&W in 1962.

Your 10-5 SN# 76486 is incomplete or is another assembly number.

The real serial number is stamped on the steel frame butt.
It should start with a C and be in the + half million range..

The 10-5 should have either a C prefix (1962-67) or a D prefix (1968-77).

It's not impossible the D15 is the serial as they stared with D1.

Look here for the correct serial:

It could be the 15th. number in the D serial number range.

I have never seen too many S&W serial numbers like that.
And it might be.

Numbers in the crane mean nothing to you - those are assembly numbers. As shown, the serial is on the bottom of the grip/frame. Older guns can have them on the barrel, cylinder as well - but those are typically pre-WWII
