To start off, I have a SC CWP. Got it about 7 years ago, and have gone through the renewal once. This weekend I spoke with a guy that just got his recently and he was telling me that now you can only carry what you qualify with. I have not heard anything about this, and I told him it was probably his instructor not being informed properly.
Does anyone know where I can find in writing that you can carry anything in SC as long as it fits within the 12 inch rule? Or even better, that you don't have to carry what you qualify with?

I don't know the answer, but I got my SC CWP last year, heard nothing of it then, and have never heard of such a thing since then.

Here's a good reference for the SC code of laws regarding CWP's:

http://www.scstatehouse.net/CODE/t23c031.htm

I can't imagine such a requirement as the one you were told. Possibly the guy, or his instructor, has misinterpreted the code as being more specific than it really is:

(5) "Proof of training" means an original document or certified copy of the document supplied by an applicant that certifies that he is either:

(a) a person who, within three years before filing an application, has successfully completed a basic or advanced handgun education course offered by a state, county, or municipal law enforcement agency or a nationally recognized organization that promotes gun safety. This education course must be a minimum of eight hours and must include, but is not limited to:

(i) information on the statutory and case law of this State relating to handguns and to the use of deadly force;

(ii) information on handgun use and safety;

(iii) information on the proper storage practice for handguns with an emphasis on storage practices that reduces the possibility of accidental injury to a child; and

(iv) the actual firing of the handgun in the presence of the instructor;

Hello,
I'm a SC CWP holder and a SC State Constable, and there is zero truth to what your friend told you about having to carry the firearm that you qualified with. FWIW, I, my fiance, and both my parents all carry handguns that are different from the ones with which we qualified on. Unfortunately, I can't provide you with the exact citation at this moment, but hopefully my 2 cents will amount to something for you!

p.s. Any instructor telling you otherwise might be trying to get you to either a) re-take a class he conveniently offers when you want to carry a different firearm, or b) sell you a new weapon (if he's also a FFL/gunshop owner) on the day you take your class, so "you won't have to re-take the exam if you buy it later", a la used car salesman... Or, maybe your friend is just randomly mis-informed....

I have been through two renewals with my SC CWP. The original CWP's did come with a requirement that you carried what you qualified with. Qualification with a different gun cost $5 as I recall. Within a year or so of the initiation of the program, SLED got religion, or the attorney general issued an opinion of the legislature's intent, and the requirment was dropped. Now you can carry anything that you can conceal.

Thanks Clemson. This makes sense. His instructor was probably old school and did not get a refresher course.
So, which one are you? Clem? or Clem's son? (Sorry....inside joke here at USC)

Hey, HEY!! You just wait till next year.......(How many times has that been said??!)
The wife is a Clemson grad, and starts grad school here at USC next month. I work at USC. Game day gets real interesting around the neighborhood!

I got my CWP in Feb 07, and there is no restriction on the gun you can carry versus qualify with. I think that guy is incorrect.
