I went to my local gun shop to pick up a new Henry 45colt steel today that I had ordered.
When the associate opened the box the first thing we both noticed was that the barrel was a light brown color. Using a rag and cleaner rubbing really hard he was able to remove some of the brown coloring and said it appeared to be rust. He immediately said he was sending the gun back to Henry and would order me another gun from their distributor.
Has anyone else had such a experience?

Wow! Hard to imagine how long it would have been in the box to do that. New old stock? Flood damage at the distributor's warehouse? See if your FFL can talk with the distributor and ask them to hand pick the replacement.

Could it be a rust inhibitor coating? Most gun manufacturers put a light coat on to protect the gun while stored in warehouse, not knowing when the gun will be sold. And yes in my experience it is always brown.
