so reloading .40 cal shot through a glock 23 with a wolf barrel

After shooting, de-capping and sizing (rcbs die..single die for both functions)

I get something weird

So I have a 8 in 1 Lyman case gauge I picked up from bass pro...

You see in the first picture the brass drops in just let fine, no issues

The second picture is dropping in the original glock barrel (just for a plunk test), no issues

The third, well this is kind of weird
The brass catches and hangs on a Lyman single gauge.

Why would this be? Isn't a .40 cal case gauge the same from brand to brand...and what is weird is both gauges are the same brand, just different style.

I am worried about the case bulge on .40's even thou I am not firing them through the factory glock barrel, using a wolf barrel and just using the glock barrel as a plunk tester.

Thoughts? Are these ok to reload if they are passing the barrel test?

Thanks!!

They are the same caliber but are not cut to the same specs. One might be to SAAMI max and the other cut for a minimum diameter match barrel. Good reason to use your calipers and the SAAMI measurements to see what is what. If they plunk and then fire OK from the Wolff barrel the single gauge may be cut out of spec. Either way If your ammo works in the barrel you are using I would not worry.

Yeah. They seem to plunk in the barrel just fine. I'll check with my calipers and see what I find.

Thanks man. I appreciate it!!

I have several 40S&W Lone Wolf barrels and they have the tightest chambers that fully support case base that I have seen compared to factory barrels.

Chances are, if your finished rounds fully chamber freely in Lone Wolf barrel with a "plonk", they will fully chamber in other barrels.

FYI, I found Lee carbide sizing die with smaller radius of opening to size brass further down on case base with smaller OD than other brand dies to the point where I do not need to "push-through" resize overly expanded brass with U-die or FCD.

I also use the Lee carbide 40/10MM dies and have had no problems with my ammo plunking on any of my pistols. I just recycle the brass with the big guppy bellies as I have about a five gallon bucket of unprocessed OF brass at the present time. The other brass with small bumps will resize OK with the standard die for me. Your RCBS die might not be sizing things down as much as my Lee brand die. You can get a Lee decap/size carbide die by itself if you want to direct from Lee.

I'd check the die that isn't accepting the cases for cleanliness, burrs, etc. Sometimes bullet lube can build up and cause problems. A little carb cleaner and a brass bore brush followed by a couple of patches may set things right.

On another note, if you're going to go to the trouble of plunk testing your loaded rounds, use the barrel that you're going to shoot them through.

Just because they'll plunk into your old Glock barrel don't assume that they'll do the same in your tighter chambered Lone Wolf barrel.
