Kent County Commissioner Mayhew went on record the other day that he would like to see a county gun buyback. Why? Well it seems the druggie gang bangers have been asserting their territorial rights in SE Grand Rapids and there have been a couple dozen shooting over the last couple months, including at least 12 fatal assassinations. In fact, two brothers, one crime free and the other with a couple of minor misdemeanors assassinated a local drug goblin that had been terrorizing the neighborhood. Seems they had their fill of him and walked up and shot him to death.
Commissioner Mayhew, who is a local troublemaker and virtually anti-anything having to do with the local police, believes that these evil guns will suddenly pick up and walk away from their gang banger owners and submit themselves for confiscation. Mayhew also wants amnesty for the shooters, drug lords, murderers, drive by shooters and generally any bg. He also wants to have peace talks with the bangers. :banghead:
To his credit, Grand Rapids Police Chief Dolan's comment was: (loosely quoted) "Every gun buy back that I've seen only resulted in the turning in of guns other than the ones we'd like to see. I don't support it. As for peace talks, if you invite me I'll bring along some of my officers and we'll arrest those with outstanding warrants." Kudo's to Dolan!
One wonders why Mayhew's local supporters don't encourage him to get behind re-uniting the family breakdown in his community, to encourage kids to stay in school, learn a trade, begin a culture of work and accountability rather than welfare and standing around the corners in baggy pants making up rap songs all day long. Nope, he'd rather whine and encourage folks to be continue in the culture of victimhood and acceptance of the fact that their children are out of control. Mayhue ought to be rounding them up rather than blaming, once again, the tools used by these no-accounts. I've been watching this man make a fool out of himself for years. Fortunately he has some opposition this year for his Commission seat: A local AM radio activist that advocates personal responsibility. He seems to be having a ever growing constituancy. We'll see who the public supports; a whining, blame everything but the problem Mayhue or a stand up take charge sort of guy.
