Here's a CCW comparison chart

Ever been shot with one? I don't give too much emphasis to the so called "one shot stop statistics". They are not really statistics, more like raw data that has been selected based on some criteria. Don't think a 38 Special will do the job? Hold still while we test that theory. Where are "The Myth Busters" when you need them?

Actually I find the chart misleading at best......the best % of stops is the 357 which was surpassed by the 40S&W quite a while ago............

They dont specify bullet/maker type of the designated caliber and their respective percentage.................

So regardless of whether I shoot WWB FMJ target loads or 127gr +P+ Rangers from my CZ Compact its got the same OSS rating........ba ha ha

And the barrel lengths differ from gun to gun of the same caliber.....effecting the given velocity of the round and changing the overall velocity of the given caliber changes its related muzzle energy.........and its placing on the chart/percentage..............

I think its a neat chart if your looking for a neat chart to look at.............

Shoot well.

yeah i was looking at it as more of a specs comparison (size, weight, etc.). ignore the % column.

Definitely ignore the % column...

I'm a little surprised he included that column at all...I don't want to get into the general methodology argument here (it would be the 5 millionth time that's been rehashed) -- but beyond that, there are two other problems.

First, he's made choices about what load to select the % for...but I'm not sure that the best loads have always been selected (could be wrong about that, it's been a while since I studied the M&S numbers).

Second, some of these loads are not going to do as well as the M&S numbers in short barrels. Example: I'll bet the .45 ACP % is for guns with 5" barrels; some loads that do very, very well in 5" .45 barrels do much less well in 3.5" barrels (the Fed 230 gr HS is an example).

There's a lot of good stuff on the chuckhawks website, so take this all FWIW.

on the .357 %

I know of a kid here in town that was shot twice at arms-length in the chest with a .357 and lived. The kid was high on something (other than life) and challenged cops with a gun. The kid was laughing and joking in the ambulance with a collapsed lung and a nicked aorta. He bled out quite severely until the aorta could be closed. I remember the sight of the blood running out of the ambulance doors at the hospital when they were opened. The kid is alive and well in jail today. Lost all respect for the .357 that day. Even the best shot placement can be overcome with good medical attention.

There are just too many variables involved with shootings, that is why I no longer live and die by the published "one shot stops".
