At the range today with son and his girl. I was mostly loaded mags and they were doing the shooting. I was loading a 9mm mag for my Beretta 92, using
a box of Winchester white box from Walmart. I was loading and talking just
taking bullets out of the box. I remember one round seemed kinda hard to get
in but in went in. Girlfriend starts firing the Berreta and half way through the clip gun jams with what looked like a "stovepipe". She pulled the slide back but
round was still stuck in the barrel throat. I took the gun and locked the slide bad and pried the stuck round out. To my surprise it was a .40 cal round.
We had no 40 cal ammo with us, I dont even own a 40 cal gun.
There was a 40cal round in the box of 9mm from Winchester.
That was a really strange , Son asked how that could have happend and I told him I had no idea.
Weird.

That's a new one to me.

In all reality I would bet that the stray .40 SW found its way into the 9mm box at the store. I can almost picture someone opening several boxes looking at a few bullets before they buy them and accidentally putting one in the wrong box.

That was your subconscious trying to get your attention. I hate it when I miss those little signs.

I'd guess that, like was posted earlier, someone was looking through the boxes and replaced a .40 into a 9mm box. I just don't see that happening at the factory.
On the other hand.
You didn't have that box anywhere near some of that Miracle Gro fertilizer, did you? Mebbe a few sprinkles landed on that cartridge?

That's one of the problems that can happen when a store allows people to open boxes of ammo to examine the bullets. If they get more than one open they can mix up a single round. May be customers, may be employees. Probably was just carelessness.

I also agree that someone was most likely comparing bullets (I've done that when purchasing a new firearm - just compare the different choices to see which cartridge I think I will like best out of two or three different calibers).

Most .45 ACP autos will support the 40 with the extractor and it will fire.

If that were to happen, how could it build any pressure? I've seen plenty of 9mm shot through a 40, and the bullets don't make it to the berm.

I have had a similar situation, but it was intentional. About 6 months ago when I bought my LCP, I went to academy looking for some .380 (I know, I know.... fat chance) They did have one box of 50 Remington .380 HP on the shelf for $30. Since it was all I could find, I decided to get it. For some reason I decided to open the box and take a look at the ammo. I noticed they were FMJ.... then I looked at the head stamp which was winchester 9mm. Some one swapped the trays out of a box of cheap winchester FMJ 9mm and got a good deal on some .380HP. I gave the guy at the counter the box back and told him about the problem.

but they do blow the front of the 9MM case out to .40, so there is some pressure there, just not enough to cause damage. The only problem would be if the bullet did not leave the barrel and one fired another round. That would probably be OK as well, but I am not going to try it.

I did the same DUMB A** move with my Kimber, and loaded a 40 in the mag. Looked identical, to my carry loads. Luckily it was the top round in the mag, and promptly fell out the end of my gun opon chambering. I'm glad it did!

[Be glad you weren't shooting a .45 ACP and have a .40 mixed in... /QUOTE]

I have found a piece of brass at the range that looked like that is exactly what had happened.:what: It looked like a reversed bottleneck.
