I had a very specific need. I like to carry a smaller sized bag with everything I need for the range, and keep one hand free. Having a hand free makes taking the subway easier and more secure here in New York City. So I needed a way to carry two guns and everything else I need for the range, in a bag which was 10" high, 15" long, and 8" deep. Further, my two 22s are both 7" barrels and take up a lot of space. To top it off, NYC law required that the gun be in a locked box and ammo can't be in the same box.
Absolutely *none* of the cases designed to carry two pistols would fit in my bag (well, at least none that would leave space for anything else. Then someone suggested I try a cash box. I did some searching at Staples.com and found this one for only $15.75:

I got a piece of foam and made a custom insert:
So I can now get the two guns, spotting scope and tripod, tools, cleaning supplies, targets, muffs, etc all into that bag.
So the cash box worked out well for me. And before anyone suggests a nice range box, remember my NYC restriction...have to keep the guns locked up and separate from the ammo. All the range boxes I've seen would require me to carry another bag with the ammo.
So if you ever need to lock up two guns is a very tight space, remember the cash boxes. And they come in lots of different sizes too.
