I hate to mis-file things, but after reading several threads I couldn't find a better category for this posting.

I often get an opportunity to go to the range with little notice, and I like to have a range box that is already put together so all I have to gather up is a rifle or two and ammo. I've tuned the contents of my box over the years until I'm happy with it, and I'm including my list of contents here. My question is what other items do you keep in your range box?

Contents:

Bead bad / Sand bag (Mine is made out of a denim pant leg full of small plastic BBs.
Universal gun cleaning kit
Small can of spray gun oil (I use G96)
Universal screwdriver and bit set
Envelope full of targets
White index labels for patching target holes
Pad of post-it notes to give me better target visibility at range
Roll of twine flagged at 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 yards for determining ranges
Staple gun & staples
empty plastic Wal-Mart bags for collecting fired brass
Spotting scope, Tripod, & Lens cloths
Bore-sighter and arbors
Duct-tape
Pliers
Ear muffs / Spare ear plugs (several sets - somebody always forgets theirs)

Am I missing anything that you find useful?

I would add water, hand cleaner, paper towel, small first-aid kit (band-aids, triple-antibiotic ointment, etc.), boonie/fishing hat for shade and sunglasses. I walk off my distances to targets. Maybe snacks for outdoor range/hills shooting? (Indoor range has snack dispensers)

My range bag contents (MidwayUSA range bag):
- Cell phone
- One chilled bottled water for each shooter
- Mini gun cleaning kit: Hoppes #9, copper bore brushes, small multi-brush, small bottle of lube, hand cleaner, paper towel (Viva Kleenex brand - it's almost cloth-like)
- 10-40 sheets 8x11 copy paper for target and bingo marker (2 colors) for center mark
- Masking tape to cover holes (indoor range provides tape, bring my own for outdoor range/hills
- Eye/ear protection (I carry extra collapsible models or use 9mm cases in an emergency)
- Empty 1000 round bullet boxes for spent cases
- Small first-aid kit (band-aids, triple-antibiotic ointment, etc.)
- Screwdrivers, slip-joint pliers, multi-tool, etc.
- Staple gun & staples for stapling cardboard pieces to wooden stands (outdoor shooting)
- Boonie hat/sunglasses (outdoor shooting)
- Binoculars/spotting scope with mini bench tripod (for rifle shooting)

Add a heavy brass or steel cleaning rod for removing stuck cases or that rare bullet stuck in the barrel from a squibb load...don't laugh, I have seen it happen more than once. :)

I would add
- Gun(s)
- Ammo
- Knife (in a multitool with pliers and screwdrivers)
- Brasscatcher

I have a short handled 16 oz. hammer to tap on the rod with.

Things not listed:

Shooting glasses
Ink Pen
Micro Screwdriver set to adjust sights on handguns
A couple of rags to wipe hands, guns, ect.
Shooting Range ID card

The most useful thread I have seen. I always just throw things together. Now to find a bag for this.... Ah! The Wife never uses this florescent pink one.
I especially like the twine with flags. Never thought of that! Happen to have a roll here somewhere!

My range boxes stays in the back O my jeep, I use a large tote from Lowes and a smaller plastic tool box

a couple things I don't see on your list you'll want are insect repellent, a cargo blanket and a chronograph

a cargo blanket is especially useful, I use mine as a shooting mat, a towel to dry wet shooting benches, its been folded up and used as a recoil absorbing pad and has even been stapled up to the posts of the shooting pavilion or rifle rack to serve as a brass catcher. A large enough one can even be a great brass catcher laid flat on the ground

Bullets, primers, powder, press, dies, calipers, spotting scope, rest, rear bag, wind flags, Garphite powder

In addition to lots of things above .... shooting glasses, stick matches (smoker pot keeps the bugs away), I use Shoot-N-See targets, mini tripod for spotting scope, staples for staple gun, crepe paper strips (wind indicators).

Range bag

I recommend screwdrivers that are custom to weapons to be used. NO universal screwdrivers.

Just my personal feelings.

I agree with this for working on guns in the garage, but I never really plan to work on one at the range. The uniscrews are a "just in case" measure, much like my universal cleaning kit. I always clean my guns when I get home with a nicely coated one-piece rod, but a good universal kit can clear a dirty bore or get a gummed up action functioning again in a pinch, and I won't have lost/wasted an afternoon I could have spent shooting. I tend to think of my rangebox tools as minimal essentials, like the emergency tool kit I keep in the trunk of my car, but it's just a difference in approach :) Most of the guys I shoot with just bring a gun and shells.

My box which doubles as a general hunting field box has:
Ammunition
Earplugs (a few spares)
Electronic Earmuffs (for me only)
2-way radio x2 (multi-channel 2-mile things, just enough so I don't have to yell 100 yards)
Sling (doesn't stay on the gun 24/7)
Choke tubes
Spare Cable-Lock
Any Hunting Licenses that are current or in-season
Set of Allen Wrenches

After reading this thread that is going to include a cleaning kit to. The funniest thing is I know 2 guys who claim to be avid shooters that I went to shoot with who were really confused as to why I would bring a spare box to the range with only 1 gun.

^ Garphite (a few posts up)

What's Garphite powder?

For those who forget toilet paper, $1 US Dollar works too. I recommend a single bill, as 4 quarters doesn't work nearly as well. :)

(That's my attempt at humor today folks.)

Oooh, but I do have a decent idea for those who use multiple pieces of twine for target measuring. Why not use a single piece of twine at the longest length you want to measure and crimp fishing weights on it for the different (shorter) target lengths?

What if you only have a $20. Do you get change?
