i like to make a new skinner/hunter design every year before deer season. this is what i came up with for this time around. it is 1095 with black dymond wood scales. it is about 7.5" long with a 4" blade.

Again, great looking blade! Really ancient looking.

Question: with the 1095, are you worried about rust? I'm just always used to seeing a coating over 1095

What's the notch in the spine intended to be used for?

If you learn how to care for a knife you don't need a coating on it.

the notch is just an aesthetic addition. i started doing that some time ago on certain models and i just like the way it looks. just makes the profile more interesting to me. any steel will rust if not cared for. i give most of my blades a nice coat of ren wax after i finish them. that and a bit of oil is all i need to keep my personal blades cancer free. and remember, AL is basically like the amazon jungle in the summer months. crazy hot and humid.

Just an idea concerning the notch. The other day, I saw a fixed-blade Bear Grylls Gerber (it was a special edition survival knife) that had a very similar notch. It was unfinished inside the notch though, and light reflected off of it. Apparently, the idea was it can be used to signal a search plane/helicopter, in the event you become lost in the wilderness.

I know... it may seem like a lot more of a novelty than anything else, but I thought the idea itself was clever, at least. And in the remote chance that you do get lost in the wild, I suppose it could help.

What do you think? Novelty, or good idea?

I like the notch but could you add a little lip on it to make it a bottle opener?

great minds think alike. i have actually started incorporating a bottle opener on several of my designs. i like my beer as much as any red-blooded American, so why not make that notch useful? good looking out, fellas.
