When did Herter's stop selling reloading equipment? I have some Herter's stuff (dies powder measure etc.) and I believe it is all older than me. I don't have a complaint, It all works perfectly. To bad they went away. From what I can find on the Internet, Cabela's bought the name.

Just taking a wild guess, but it seems somewhere between 1970 and 1974. I do remember one of their local stocking dealers selling off stacks of Herter's bolt action rifles for 75.00 each. Quite a tidy sum in those days. :)

The original Herters company went bankrupt quite some time ago. Anything new you see with the Herters name is being made for Cabela's. Most of their equipment was a little rough, but it functioned fine. They didn't put much into finishing work.

Hope this helps.

I think they went bankrupt around 1979 - 1981. I learned to handload from my Dad on Herter's equipment in the early 70s. They used to have a store about 25 miles from where I grew up. Used to enjoy going into that place.

I think George Herter ended up in debt building more and more stores. Then he got busted by the Federal Government under the endangered species act in the 70s for for selling Jungle Cock feathers used for making fish lures in the 70s. Trade in feathers of endangered species did not take in consideration stockpiles dating to periods before the ban. From what I understand the bird feathers deal was so costly he never recovered.

A trip through a pre-GCA68 Herter's catalog would always leave me salivating. Their range of products was enormous and I still have several Herter's dies that are still used.

I still fondly recall the many hours my brothers and I would spend paging through the latest Herter's catalogs in the '60s. And I can still quite clearly recall my Dad routinely ordering firearms from their catalogs and a week or two later them being delivered to our front door. Those were the days!!!....

Sigh,, every once in a while I get my 1976 Herter's catalogue out and dream about the days that prices were that low.
