Hey guys...couple of questions,

I had an XD subcompact 9mm that I liked, except for the night sights and blue finish.

I plan on getting a fixed sights stainless subcompact but don't know if I want a .40 or 9mm.

My questions are as follows:

1.) I understand the subcompact .40 mags fit in the 9mm to add a couple of rounds, do they drop free? I did that with my XD9 4 inch model and the mags did not drop free whenever dropped fully loaded. Is the same true for the subs?

2.) Is there much difference in the recoil on the .40 vs. the 9mm. I would think it would be negligable due to the shortness of the barrel, the 9mm did have a good snap to it and if the .40 is considerably more, maybe I'd be better off with the 9mm.

3.) Is there much of a velocity difference between a 9mm 4 inch barrel than a 9mm in a 3 inch?

1. They should drop free from what I understand. Although I think this was more useful during the AWB when you couldn't get >10 rd mags for them. Now the gun will come with the normal magazines. I don't think you can get any more rounds in a normal cap subcompact .40 than the 9mm, but I could be wrong.

2. Yes there is a difference. I've shot a subcompact 9mm xd and a 4" .40, and the .40 has substantially more recoil, even with the larger gun.

3. Not sure on this, but there will be somewhat of a difference.

I can only repsond to number 2 in regard to recoil, and I can't really do the comparison because I have never fired the XD in 9mm. I have the .40 in 3", 4" and 5" models though. I just purchased the 3" about a month ago and have put about 500 trouble free rounds through it. The recoil is in my opinion very managable, especially for a sub compact.

#1: Yup, I have 13 9mm rounds loaded in a 40SC mag & it drops free when full.

#2: I'm sure it's snappier in .40, but have only shot a 4" in .40.

#3: I tried to find some tables related to velocity but couldn't...

For what it's worth, I was out this weekend with my son and was shooting one of my Hi-power 9mm's and my .40 S&W XD. Believe it or not, there was not much difference that either he or I could tell in the kick or snap between each gun. My XD is a 4" service model. We were shooting WWB 165gr .40 S&W FMJ and WWB 115gr 9mm HP's.

I wouldn't base my decission on kick of the gun, it's not that big of a difference. But then again, recoil has never bothered me anyway.

I've noticed the WWB .40 in 165 gr. is some light stuff. Not nearly the ooomph of a 180gr. Speer/Federal

Marshall, either there's a typo there or you have one rare gun. ;)
