Hi there fellow shooters, hunters, reloaders!! Thankyou all for such an informative, friendly forum... have been watching and learning for a while and thought I'd say hi and thanks.About me - born 61 and from the age of 17 lived, breathed and yearned for the outdoors...shooting (field and game), hunting (pigs, goats, foxes, hares, rabbits, crows, water buff), fishing, reloading!!At 30 sold off all my shooting gear (silly move, precious guns I'll never replace, tens of thousands projectiles etc) to fund university and after many years am proud to say am a veterinary surgeon (graduated 97).Now this year have felt a yearning to rediscover the passions of my youth and get back into things firearm related.Have reloaded for 17AH,222,30-30,7x57,30-06,12G and helpede mates reload for many other cals. Still that was a long time ago and have much to relearn. Kind regards Peter

Peter,
WELCOME mate!! Congratulations on graduating in '97 and well done for deciding to get back into the shooting sports. Where are you in Australia. My brother lives in Sydney ... he's an astronomer in the Physics department at the University of Sydney. I lived in Sydney for a year back in '92 and '93 and loved it. Anyway, jump right in to the thick of things and have fun.

So what's your plan for getting back into shooting? What firearms are you thinking of buying (assuming that's part of the plan).

:)

Thanks 1858...Oz is a great country...shame about our firearms laws and how our government has shafted us. Currently have Brno no2 .22 and Winnie 101 12G Field, am in process of purchasing old Brno 22Hornet and in coming months/years have 221 Fireball, 17AH , 30-30,30-06, 7x57 and 45-70 (ruger No1) in my sights . Reclaiming what I gave up I suppose. Am keen to get into deer hunting ...In Victoria we have Sambar, Hog, Fallow and Red available. Love chasing foxes and rabbits so will target these as well. To some it will seem incongruous that a vet vet will be into hunting ...I'm comfortable with it and am a fierce defender of shooting and hunting - a mate who graduated as a vet in my class is also into shooting/hunting/fishing and trapping so I have someone to chew the fat with...kinda cool that all sorts of people and professions are into this great sport.

Welcome.

I thought guns were pretty much outlawed there. Can't understand it though, with so much wild back country.

Welcome, Peter. Vets are some of my favorite people, since my wife is such a dog nut, if you can call Shelties dogs...........

I shot with some of your mates at End of Trail in New Mexico this past June. Great bunch of people.

Good luck rebuilding your collection.

Fred

Welcome Peterc. I agree this board has lots of great people and they don't mind at all answering questions. The people here are so nice thats why I joined this group of nice people.

peterc,

Just wait 'till you get your Hornet, it is loads of fun. Lots of Hornet shooters and loaders on this site. You'll really gain a wealth of knowledge here and most of it is worthwhile.

Glad to hear from our Southern neighbor!

Peter, there you go ... you could offset the high prices down under by importing Sambar flats to us folks in the US ... it's in high demand over here for knife handles, pistol grips etc and it's hard to find since the Indian government limits how much can be exported from their country.

:)

Welcome Peterc. I worked with some of your Aussie military for 10 years. Always a fun and lively bunch to be sure.

Thankyou all for your kind replies. This forum has a real nice vibe about it ......everyone is to be congratulated on that.

GaryL - guns aren't outlawed just our laws tightened after a few nutters ran riot and killed a lot of innocent people...you may have heard of the Port Arthur massacre. You need to sit a safety test, install a gun safe,be licensed, all firearms registered and semi-.auto centerfires are banned, ditto semi and pump action shotties. Pistol licences are harder to get and include another test, fingerprinting and other conditions. Still there are hundreds of thousands of gun owners in Ozzie and plenty of shooting/hunting oppoortunities.
1858 - yes sambar makes nice blade handles - are you into blademaking.
Varmithound - my brother was an engineer in Australian army for many years - your soldiers were held in high regard by him.Australian soldiers have stood side by side with Americans in every major conflict...we are your only ally to have done this.Cheers to you all.

We heard about Port Arthur - big news with our media here - they love bad news that supports their views, and pretty much hate everything good (unless of course it makes them look good).

No semi-autos is almost like a ban.

Some of us know a bit of Aussie history. Your support during WWII made a big difference in the Pacific theater, and troop morale was always boosted by shore leave in Australia. No question your guys had a very significant impact restraining the Japanese, especially early on. It wouldn't have changed the outcome in the end, but very many lives were saved and the duration of the war definitely reduced. You can be proud of your vets.

GaryL - Aussie troops are well respected worldwide and by their countryman (apart from how some Viet Vets were treated, which was a disgrace). There are numerous examples in military history to back up this claim but I like the quote by Rommel when explaining to his boss (Hitler) why the german army was held up in North Africa......" These are no ordinary troops - these are Australians. Give me two divisions of Australians and I will conquer the world....". I have read this many times and assume it isn't folklore. Your special forces recently had some nice things to say about our SAS in Afghanistan....Hopefully true and not just for the media.

Peter Welcome to THR for sure you are very welcomed here. Look forward on getting you up to speed on reloading.

No yet but that's something I'd LOVE to get into. Currently I'm in the process of making two pairs of grips for a pair of USFA Rodeos using elk ... I wish I was making them out of sambar but it's just too hard to find.

:)

G'Day Peter

I'm into the Northern Territory and QLD. If I were an Aussie. instead of a Michiganite, I'd live in Queensland. Talk about feral hogs! I love "Bacon Busters" magazine. I have knowledgable Internet buds from Australia that keep me informed. Semi-autos are outlawed in OZ, but the Remington 7600 Pump is quite fast. I'm a total advocate of the .243 Winchester caliber with 100 grainers in handloads for busting hogs and roos. I have developed .243 caliber loads that really work beyond merely just-well. I, today, purchased a Burris Signature Select scope in 6-24x44mm that should produce a new high for me accuracywise. cliffy

Peter, welcome.

Speaking of Sydney, my hubby and I will be there next month for vacation. Can't wait!
