I'm only posting the entire news story because I can't find the video on youtube. If you can find it, POST IT!

Here is the story from the NY Post.

To me it was just another story until I watched the video. Click play and be amazed, it looks like the store-owner pulled a 995 out from under the counter! :D

I'm happy I've bought one now. No one can deny it has a legitimate place as a self-defense gun after that!

Yes, I saw that on CNN tonight. Great story, I was glad that the guy complied, and was pleasently suprised that the owner gave him some money and food. I just wish that every robbery went like this. Also, from what the robber said in his letter, it sounds like he has really turned his life around. Further re-enforces my philosophy of trying to hold the criminal, rather than not take the chance. Man, I know I'll get flamed now.

It's hard to tell what brand/style of gun it is from that video, but what other 9mm rifle could it be besides a Hi Point carbine? The story doesn't give any info beyond that it was a 9mm rifle, so I don't call that "advertising." Only us gun nuts will notice the type/brand of gun.

Here's a pic that shows clearly that it IS in fact a Hi Point carbine :what:.

Was this said in jest? I hope so. My ability to detect humor around the holidays tends to dim a bit with the exposure to the in laws and such.

HiPoint rifle, single barrel shotgun, rusted Ishapore Enfield, a pointed finger with condemnations and warnings of the wrath of God... what does it matter the method used?

I would think the would-be robber saw a firearm and surrendered, rather than recognizing the model rifle, thinking to himself "Holy Cow, it's a HiPoint 995, I must relent!".

Now if the shopkeep fended off a drove of armed and vicious men in a fierce shootout, blasting away a few hundred flawless rounds with a rifle getting splashed with exploding Slurpy machines and popping bags of kitty litter, I might indeed take note of the make and model.

However, pointing a (whatever) at someone that yields total compliance says more about the man than the weapon. If the video showed the robber with the rifle and forcing compliance from the shopkeep, would this thread still have been created?

BTW, I have nothing against the 995. I would have said the same thing had it been an M1 Carbine or Mossberg 500, firearms I personally keep for protection.

While the deli owner would have been justified in using deadly force, he clearly held the upper hand in that situation and the theif knew this, thus surrendering. That is the best possible outcome.

However, if the same theif had been armed with a gun, I would see the victim's only option being to drop behind the counter and shoot from cover until the threat was gone.

Trying to imagine myself in that situation with perhaps a home invader, if I had the drop on the thug and he were armed with a bat or other weapon that required him to close distance and thrust/swing, I may also hold him at gunpoint while calling the police. But if the home invader has a gun, I won't even give him a chance to realize he has made a mistake. My reaction time on the trigger is pretty quick at .26 seconds, but that's about as much time as it would take the opponent to raise his weapon and discharge it. By the time I reacted and pulled the trigger, I'd be hit. Not gonna take that chance.

I've arrested people for various crimes, and surprisingly enough, they're always sorry AFTER they're arrested.

He "I'm sorry I pulled a knife on you"

Me "Not as sorry as you're going to be"

A Sasquatch hunter featured on "MonsterQuest" on THC a couple years ago pulled a Hi Point in a recreation of an incident where he allegedly took a shot at a Bigfoot.

The gun was uglier than the Sasquatch :).
