Just saw a browning hi-power captain model with an adjustable sight out to 600 or so metres. new gun on closeout at local shop, priced out the door at $550. any opinions on good deal or not.

how useable is this sight set up or is it just a safe queen. its quite lovely by the way, with its blued finish and wood grips. been looking for another hi-power mainly a practical model but this one caught my eye.

My recollection is that CDNN has those new on closeout for more than that. You might download their catalog and be sure. The price seems more than fair for a new Hi-Power with the capitan sights.

Now, what do you mean, "How usable are the sights?" Are you going to become an ace shot at 600 meters with the pistol? No. Will it be just fine at reasonable distances? Sure.

I've shot these (had a few old ones come through a store where I worked in days of yore), and they're fun. Cranking the sight up to 100 or 200 meters and shooting across those distances with some accuracy is fun.

I see no reason why the pistol would have to be a safe queen, though I do prefer some kind of night sights on a CCW piece.

I picked one up last fall at Galyan's for $560 or so (but got a $75.00 gift card for "free" with the deal) . Since then, I've put perhaps 500 rounds through it. Compared to my other BHP (silver chrome model), the sights are definately different but it is otherwise the same weapon. I like it a lot.

$550 seems like a reasonable price; the cheapest I've seen BHP Mk. IIIs around here (MN) has been for $599-$699 depending on where you shop.
