...no, nothing to do with the new FN announcement ;)

I have two hi-powers, hereinafter referred to as the FM and the MKIII. The question is about the trigger mechanism.

1. FM trigger is really good IMO. Tiniest bit of takeup with a crisp letoff after you hit the "wall" and squeeze. There's so little takeup it's a lot like a good 1911 trigger.

2. MKIII also has a nice crisp break but has a lot more takeup or free movement before getting to the wall.

I would like to reduce the amount of takeup substantially so that both guns "feel" about the same. If I put the FM slide on the MKIII frame, lo and behold, the trigger feels just like the FM.

Both have had the mag safety removed, and both have Cylinder and Slide safety, hammer, and sears installed, so the fire control components in the frames are all similar. On the slide though the bar that transfers trigger movement to the sear (sear lever?) seems to be the issue. On the FM it's fairly straight but on the MKIII it's a different shape - it dips upward towards the sear engagement point as well as having sort of a paddle at the rear.

Here's the question - can I bend the sear lever so there's less free play? If so, how would I do so? I have no idea if this part requires a serious heat treat like the sear and hammer, but in my mind the sear lever "pushes" the sear, as opposed to there being friction between the two parts like there is between the sear and the hammer.

Anyway - if I can modify what I have, great. If I can buy a different part and install it in the MKIII myself, mostly great (I have tools and can push pins/replace stuff pretty well). If I would have to take it to a gunsmith, not great - I don't have a good relationship with anyone nearby as there have been retirements etc and I'm not inclined to ship it right now.

Any help/suggestions gratefully received. Thanks!

The difference in the two slides is that the MkIII has a firing pin safety to make it “drop safe”, while the FM does not.

Unlike the Series 80 safeties in 1911s, I don’t know of any “delete” kits for BHPs.

MKIII FPS doesn’t effect the trigger pull
