Anyone have any suggestions that may alleviate the very hard racking of the Hi Standard Victor with the hammer down on an empty chamber?

I've had mine for years. I really don't think there is a way. They can be touchy so I would not be inclined to make adjustments that could affect another function, like reliability.
I do use a light coat of grease on the slide instead of oil.
Eat your Wheaties.

I also used grease on the slide and frame rails and on the front face of the hammer.
Also, clean out the action to remove old dried lube and fouling and apply a good lubricant. That always seems to help.

As above, don't start tampering with it just to try to lighten the slide tension. That invariably causes serious problems, which may not be immediately or readily apparent.

One Match shooter woman I once knew kept a rubber jar opener pad in her shooting box.
She'd wrap the pad over the rear of the slide to give her a better grip.

I've relegated my old High Standards to the safe. Beautiful and accurate guns, but I got tired of tinkering with them. Too many other options on the market now.

To this day I cannot dry fire any firearm, even if it is OK. Can't make myself shoot a doe either. Old habits!
