So I'm already planning my next gun purchase. I've narrowed it down to these two, High Standard The Victor (ML prefix from Hamden) and the Sig 1911 Traditional Match Elite. The HS is an older "The Victor" model 5.5" barrel with barrel weight. It's a Hamden gun in about 95 to 98 percent. No box or papers. Price is $750. I've always wanted a HS Victor, but always get really close to buying and then can't seem to pony up that kind of money for a .22. Just hard to wrap my head around. I have a Ruger MK II Target and my old man has a S&W Model 41, so I'd like to add a HS Victor just to round out the collection.

Second choice is a Sig 1911 Traditional Match Elite. It has the traditional slide as opposed to Sig's proprietary slide design on their other models. It has fully adjustable target sights. It's all stainless with the frame coated in their Nitron finish for a reverse two-tone look. Price is $850.

So what would you do in this scenario?

I've had a Hamden made Victor for the past 35 years. Nice and accurate. In my younger years with good eyes, I used to head shoot rabbits and squirrels with it. I'm afraid I can't help you much with your dilemma, except to say, everybody needs a good .22 and .45 ACP handgun.

I know what you mean. I already have the MK II Target and it's very accurate. And I also have several nice 1911s. So neither are something that I just HAVE to have. Just trying to decide which one I'd rather have more. I'd probably shoot the Sig more and The Victor would probably spend more time in the safe than it would at the range. But I've always wanted one.

I really need some advice. The seller has came down to $650 shipped. This is really tempting, but I still don't know.

buy once, cry once. you only live once.

I like high-end target .22's, but I also like 1911's. I would say get the 22 and hold off on the 1911 until you can get a really nice one.

Well I ended up buying The Victor. Paid $600 for it, so I guess I didn't do that bad. I'll be sure to post some photos when it comes in.

It finally came in! The condition just blew me away. I can't wait to get it out and shoot it over Christmas!

Man, does that photo ever make me miss my Victor 10X. I've long-since replaced the "shooting" part of it with some perfectly capable rimfire pistols. But the look & feel of that old Victor..., dang it, it's like seeing a girl you broke-up with years before across the room...lookin' like a million! CONGRATS on a fine pistol!

Beautiful, well-made, well-finished, accurate, classic .22 target pistol that's main purpose was serious Bullseye competition. Too bad that they'll never make them like it again. In the condition your pistol appears to be in, I think $600.00 was a better than "average" price. Around these parts, the same pistol would easily fetch $700.00-maybe even more. This pistol deserves to be shot, not tucked away in some dark corner!

Thanks. I plan on giving it plenty of exercise over the Christmas holiday.
