Hickock's revolver load

I read an article in guns and ammo many years ago about a double rifle in 4 bore caliber. I don't recall the specifics on the gun but they an amazing photo of a log disintegrating under some beer cans. The guy shooting had long hair that was standing straight out behind him with the rifle up around 45 degrees. It adds to the discussion on round balls especially at close range. Not much is gonna get up after being whacked with a bowling ball.

I'd suspect the round ball was more popular on the frontier than conical bullets. It took less lead to cast them and they achieved higher velocity than conicals. I wouldn't be surprised to learn Hickok also prefered the round ball. I've killed a semi full of deer with .440" round ball at distances of up to 75 yards. They seemed to be slightly more effective than my 30/30. A round lead ball makes an awesome wound and if it doesn't flatten, it penetrates deer completely.
