I'm interested in getting something along the lines of a Brown/Baer/Wilson this summer but am not prepared to shell out that kind of money for something I haven't handled. I'll be in Tuscaloosa most of the summer but wouldn't mind a nice afternoon trip soon. If anyone here knows a place that stocks those kinds of 1911s I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance,
Hugh

If you can make it over to Gadsden one day B&B pawn on 431 has a lot of high end pistols like that. There is also Oz's Sportsman's Exchange in Gadsden as well that usually has a few nice 1911s.

There are a few places in Birmingham I would recommend and some I would advise you against. Marks Outdoors has a good number of high end 1911s, some new and used, I saw a Classic Custom there last time. Hoover Tactical has 3 used Ed browns (but they all have rails), they also have some used Wilsons(CQB for 1599 and 1799) and Baers (saw an un fired Thunder Ranch for 1600).

There is also another place called the Gun Cellar, and they might have 1911's but their service is AWFUL and some of the rudest people work there. Their prices are ridiculous and they act like telling you the price of a gun or helping you at all is the biggest burden you could bestow on them . Seriously, I dont know how they stay in business cause for the most part they are the meanest most miserable people. Every time I have been to their store it seems like thugs outnumber decent people. I have had several bad experience with the Gun Cellar and will never ever patronize their business again (its a damn shame I already bought an M4 from them, because I paid about $500 more than Mark's had it for). The Gun Cellar is the epitome of disgusting gun store snobbery. Sorry for the rant but I strongly detest this store, and I usually dont tell others what to do but I would avoid this place.

Thanks everybody for your posts. The store in Gadsden seems promising and I may have to go by there next week. I've continued shopping and think I'm going to get a Springfield Mil-Spec as a fun, full-sized, nostalgic work horse. I learned to love 1911s shooting a Colt from the 30's that has gone son to son, and it was too much for my dad to watch me shoot more than one mag at a time. I think this will be a fun and less worrisome piece. For a prize, I'm going to most likely purchase a Fusion C-bobtail Elite that I will do more oogling over than carrying.
Thanks for the store rec's/drops I'll definitely stop by all those mentioned within the next two weeks.

While on the way to Gadsden, you might try Leesburg Guns in Leesburg, Al. They are right on Hwy. 411, which goes into/comes out of Gadsden. They had several Nighthawk Custom pistols last time I was there. I don't know if these are considered "high end," because I'm not a real 1911 guy, but they sure do cost a lot.

FWIW, I've got a Baer Thunder Ranch, as well as a few Colts, and am a little over an hour away from Tuscaloosa. If you would like to shoot it, let me know.

Oh, if you're just wanting to finger something, Gary's over in Columbus MS usually has a decent selection, especially of Wilsons.

Ala Dan,yes it has been called Pistol Parlor in the past. It is now Parlor pistol and Pawn. At least it was when I drove by it daily from 1999-2009.

Another vote for Simmons, good people to deal with, good selection, good prices.

BTW,I wasn't recommending Parlor Pistol and Pawn, just mentioning them. I don't go there myself anymore. Not a friendly place unless you get the older gentlman(he's nice) everyone else is not.
