Went to the range today with my AR and I had some accuracy issues.
I have an AR that I use at work and it consistently hits 1 inch holes at 100 yards with iron sights. I picked up a new AR yesterday and off to the range today to site it in. It has an iron front sight and magpul flip up rear.

I couldn't get the shots to land center. They were dead center but there seemed to always be one low and one high and another in the middle
There is maybe 8 or 10 inches :what: between the highest and lowest shots. Maybe it just needs some fine tuning but I have high standards and this will not do.

Anybody have any suggestions on what could be happening?
I don't believe it is me because I never have problems shooting my other work AR

Do you have a scope to throw on it to verify accuracy? I would scope it, rest it, shoot it, and find out if the gun needs work. ARs are generally very accurate, even the "budget" ones.

A thin barrel, standard handguards, and a lot of sling pressure could change point of impact, as could ammo with a lot of velocity variation. As others have suggested, you might want to try benchresting it with a scope and good ammo to see what it will do. Even a basic AR should manage 2" or less at 100 yards.

Sounds like something may be loose. Check that the sights are mounted tight and that the barrel has no movement in respect to the upper.

If everything is tight pull the muzzle device (if any) and look at the crown.

Did you buy a Bushmaster or DPMS? Both are notorious for barrel nuts that aren't tightened to spec. Here is an example: http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/brass-vs-steel-cased-ammo/ From the test
:Barrel nuts were torqued to inconsistent values: two had been torqued to approximately 5 ft/lbs, while the other two had been torqued within the appropriate range of 30-80 ft/lbs.
. Two out of four is pretty bad, another reason BM and DPMS aren't well thought of. You will need a torque wrench and a barrel nut wrench to check. I don't know if you could check any other way, 5 ft. lbs is a little more than finger tight I think. What you mentioned as your problem seems to be the same as the problem they had. Even if it isn't one of those two it would still be a good idea to check.

Others have mentioned the other usual problems. Did you clean it before you went shooting? Dust or god knows what could be in the bore.
