Hi guys,

where does the term "high-speed low-drag" actually come from? I mean, I know what it is used for on this board... a role model for a certain furry, black-and-white tactical critter :)

I have no clue what it originally meant, though. Please enlighten me...

Regards,

Trooper

I believe "High Speed, Low Drag" refers most often to special operations type troops or equipment. IOW, meant for precise work where not much back-up support is expected or desired.

"high speed low drag" is a military term to mean something that is on the ball, effective or works well. ie, good.

"low speed high drag" is someone that is a complete moron, a piece of equipment that sucks, or a vehicle that breaks down often. ie, not good.

highspeed was also a derogitory term when I was going through infantry training. It was used as such.

Drill Sergeant: Come-ere, Hee-ro!

Me: Yes, Drill Saaarrnn

Drill Sergeant: Who tol' you to roll dem sleeves up, HIGH-Speeeed??

Me: Er, Um, Ugh. *Snap to an even tighter parade rest*

Drill Sergeant: How bout this, soul-jah? How bout you do some ????ing pushups until EYE get tired? How's that, Rain-jah?

Me: One drill sergeant, two drill sergeant...

Und so weiter

High-speed, low drag is an Air Force term. It relates to bombs.

Traditionally, aerial bombs have been squat, cylindrical, with a blunt nose. Such bombs are called "high drag" because they have a dramatic effect on a fighter-bomber when carried under the wings.

A more stream-lined shape was developed. These new high-speed, low drag bombs allowed fighter-bombers to operate more efficiently, but had some peculiarities -- for one thing, sights had to be recalibrated. For another, a method of slowing the bomb down when it was dropped was needed -- to give the plane time to get out of the area.

thefitzvh got it pretty right on. It's become a slang phrase that can either be used genuinely "That F-15 is a real high speed, low drag MIG eater" or sarcastically "Private Johnson what are you doing with that high speed low drag gladiator sword strapped to your chest? There are no crew-served knives in my platoon! Drop and gimme sum!"

As noted with the bomb example and other descriptions, one is oft better off to be high speed and low drag than low speed with high drag.

In the business world, movers and shakers on their way up are said to be high speed and low drag. So are fast climbing folks in the military ranks. As a result, they are often disliked by their peers because of their perceived cutthroat tactics used to advance.

HSLD is anything with a high CDI factor:D

When you think about it, all the really cool ninja stuff is actually pretty low speed high drag, like a Combat Talon or Pave Hawk. Creeping through the mountains of some 'Stan with a 90lb ruck, 400 rounds of ammo, a 40x spotting scope and a sat phone is probably the epitome of LSHD.

Of course, being chairborne I dont know what I'm talking about.

Former F-4 driver here. The Mark 82 500 lb. originally was designed (as all bombs were) with minimal drag. What that meant was that the bomb got to the ground quick, and you had better have your plane out of the blast radius before it went off. That meant fairly high "pickle" (bomb release) altitudes, with decreased accuracy.

Enter the high-drag configuration. A set of four "air-brakes" would pop open upon release dramatically slowing the bomb and delaying it's impact. Pickle altitude with the Mk 82 high-drag was (drum roll) 100 feet at 450 knots! Dive angle was 10 degrees, and you missed the ground by maybe 50 feet. But buddy, you could put that thing through the eye of a needle - great for troops in contact!

I dunno if I ever met a girl who dug tactical equipment, though...

But it's a nice thought that such a goddess might actually exist :) Actually, I met a girl yesterday who said that she was fascinated by guns. Turned out that she wasn't from Germany but from South Africa...

In fact, they're so ruddy rare that there's not even a website for 'em. (Or for the tiny number of tactical fetishists, either. Biz opp, anyone? :D)
