I dont yet own a 1911, but I figure its about time to jump on the band wagon. I dont know too much about the different model specifics and maker differences of this firearm and am looking for a reliable entry level piece. Aftermarket parts availability is kinda important because I like to switch things up often. The shop down the street has a NIB High Standard 5" parked 1911 for $350. Go, or no-go? Suggestions, and pics would be nice too. Thanks.

Didn't know they'd through thier hat into the 1911 ring.

I wouldn't be the first one on the block to buy one...

Especially since you can get a good deal on a name brand at a gun show or pawn shop. Maybe not a $350 deal though; I'd sooner have a Charles Dailey.

The High Standards seem to be made by the same people who make the RIA and Charles Daly guns. Go with the one that is best finished and feels best.

i was in the same position as you. after some research i went with the ria. customer service seems great. i would go to forum.m1911.org. they have an abundance of informaton over there

bkjeffrey,
Yes the HS is made in the Philippines by the same company as RI and CD. The biggest drawback I've heard via the M1911.org forum is the customer service. Check out the site and see the feedback. You will make the right choice. triguy

I had e-mailed Hi Standard a few months ago with a question about extra mags for my Supermatic .22lr and got kind of a smart a** reply. I wanted to know if the mags they were making now were compatible with my old pistol because I was concerned that I only had one mag and didn't want to loose it. Got a reply back saying that If I left the mag in the pistol where it belonged I wouldn't have to worry! :fire: Well, DUH! I e-mailed back that I didn't appreciate the smart a** remark and never got a reply back from them. I guess since they are the only one's that make the mags they can afford to be A**H***S.

I have just seen a post from a guy who made a thread about a new High Standard and they sent him the wrong magazine so he called customer service and guess what.......it's the same as RIA:neener:

I bought one recently. Stamped just forward of the trigger guard - and in very small letters: "CAI Pahrump,NV. Made in Philippines."

The gun shot just fine, tight groups. However, as the gun shop had misrepresented the gun as being a High Standard from the 60's made in the US, I took it back, got a full refund, and bought a Taurus PT 1911.
