A local gun shop is selling a High Standard AR-15 for $820. What's your guys' opinions on this AR?

This'll be my first gun, by the way. It just looks awesome.

You can get a S&W or Stag for that kind of cash around here out the door. Personally I've never heard of High Standard and would do one of the two mentioned above.

I'm not saying that is a bad deal since AR-15's range from $600 to several thousand new depending on who built it and how.

As an alternative, in the same general price range, you could put together something like this:

Code:
Model 1 1:9 16" 5.56 Chrome Moly upper (A2 or A3)	315.00 (1) (2)
M1S charging handle 16.00
M1S A2 buttstock complete 55.00
Bravo Company BCG 130.00
Geissele SSA trigger 145.00 (3)
WOA triggerless LPK 41.00
Gunshow lower 120.00

For a total of $822 - call it $850 with all the shipping. It's not one of the $650-700 budget builds, but it is a fairly inexpensive rifle that will likely do all that you ask it to, forever.

(1) Substitute a Del-Ton if you'd rather have a Wilson barrel than an ER Shaw Barrel
(2) Add $35 for chrome lined chamber & bore if you feel like you need it - you don't
(3) Substitute an LMT two stage trigger if you can't wait for an SSA

I've only seen them, not shot them.

But they fit tightly (FWIW, which isn't much... my best shooting AR rattles a good bit), and the finish was nice, uniform, and pretty.

High Standard doesn't offer the huge number of options of the other producers, but the products are well made, affordable, and you can always upgrade to exactly what you want on the rifle at a later time.
For $820.00 I would give serious consideration to the purchase.

Yep, and you'll only pay for it 5 times as they fraudulantly charge your credit card!

For about $130 more, you can buy and build a BCM, and have a rifle that will serve you well over your lifetime. Not to mention, should you decide that you want to sell it, you'll get far more value for the BCM than you would a High Standard.

Just because every company and their dog want to tap into the AR market doesn't mean that they know what their doing. This isn't an indictment of HS, but there are better options on the market.

Was at gun range yesterday when a man who had ordered a Doublestar (Paid $540 out the door no tax) showed up wanting his weapon. The owner was busy and asked me to inspect the weapon; the new owner was not familiar with the AR at all.. I was actually surprised at the fit and finish. The BCG was so tight I did break it down and lube (Breakfree CLP) and clean showing the new owner how to take apart and put back together.

The gas key was not really staked properly but would be an easy fix. The new owner with wife and kids in tow went to try out the weapon. He went through a box of federal wally world as fast as he could keep his 30 round mag filled.

Owner of the range ended up writing an email to Doublestar and when I left (kinda late) we were still waiting to see what kind of dealer discount he could get. Think the new owner had ordered from Buds which had been running a special on them but sorry I am not sure....$540 was a a price that blew us all away though after inspecting the gun.

Wow did not even see it was two years old!! My post was done on March 11, 2011 and the Doublestar in the post was as of March 10, 2011.
