Went out shooting yesterday. I carried a colt combat comander and my brother brought his his High Standard. This is a used gun that he recently bought but hasn't had many rounds put through it. I brought some ammo that I had reloaded, swc ammo in two different powder loads and some ball ammo that I loaded. My gun was having no problems cycling the different kinds of ammo but the High Standard wouldn't cycle the reloads. They fit the magazine of the High Standerd fine but wouldn't chamber. We took the barrel out and the head of the shells seemed to protrude from the chamber, but if they did it was very little. The OAL of the shells was below suggested max OAL for .45 cal. The high standard did ok with factory ball ammo but it did leave a dent or scratch in about 25% on the cases of the factory. The feed ramp has been polished on this gun and it seemed to have the most problem with the swc rounds. The ammo I had had been reloaded 5 to 6 times and has some minor scratches from the extractor which can cause problems but the High Standard's problem was chambering not extraction. Any suggestions, or is it time to get the High Standard into a good gunsmith. Thanks for any suggestions or let me know if you've run into a similar problem

I had the same problem with a kart match barrel, basically its the throat on the chamber. The high standard probably has a short throat or a tight chamber and needs ball and wad cutters seated as far as they will possibly go and you also need more of a rolled over crimp. Try setting the bullets deeper and adjust the crimping die to give a very tight crimp, with a slight roll over.

The loads I first loaded fired fine in my kimber , les baer and colt gold cup, it was only the kart barrel that required the shorter length and rolled over crimp.

Note you shouldn't have this problem with shooting factory ball ammo.
