There is a High Standard/Dan Wesson .357 with 6 inch barrel for sale local. I can't find much on these. What do I need to know? He is asking 400 and it looks to be 85% from the pics. It also looks like it has a fixed rear sight (MkII?)

From the 1970s.
Hi-Standard will not be able to help you with parts or service if needed.
DW may not have parts, if needed, for that one.

The one a friend was trying to trade me had a sticky trigger return.

Unless you're absolutely head-over-heels in love with it, I'd pass.

DW's from that era were known to be accurate, but COULD be finicky as far as reliability goes.
Most were good, some were not.
DWs were popular among metallic silhouette shooters, but were not widely carried by police. A gal who went through my state's police academy with me in 1980 couldn't keep hers running through the shooting segments.
Not saying ALL were bad, you may get some other responses with positive comments.

Plan B would be to offer $300 & see what happens, if you have to have it.

I'd go with plan B. Most of the DWs I've fired over the years have been excellent. Don't know exactly how long the High Standard/Dan Wesson partnership lasted but it couldn't have been long.

The high standard version is every bit as accurate as others BUT they use the older shroud design commomly known as the Pork Chop type. It is not replacable with later shroud designs. For the 400 dollar price I would wait and find a regular DW 15-2 with the other shroud design. Now if all you want is a 6" barreled dw and don't mind the shroud style tell him for a 85% HS you give him 250 to 275 for it. 400 is tooo high.

You can get all small parts for it from cz or EWKarms and grips for DW can be had from Hogue or LBCustoms. So support is still there for a HS version. Only a roll mark change of name.

The daughter of a long time hunting buddy has a DW/HS Sentinal mkII 6" with target sights that's been here car and hog pistol for some years now. She has a good long country road drive to work and has been her carry /woods gun .

The HS/Dan Wesson IS a Dan Wesson in all but name.

It will be no more or less "finicky" than any other 40 year old gun that has had ??? maintainence, cleaning, etc.

Dan Wesson revolvers are strong, durable, and very user friendly for home repair and gunsmithing.

No durability issues and still probably a better shooter than most made today. If it feels good cycles smoothly it will shoot. Act dumb and have the owner pull the barrel and shroud to show you how its done. Cycle the trigger a few times and feel for smoothness. Nothing much different from any revolvers except the barrel. even pull the grip to be sure its been maintained under it. There should be a wrench with it. if not you can't take it down to check the barrel. Work that price down some.
