Has any one else's carry guns evolved from High Tech to Low Tech?

I don't know the logic of why it has happened. I started out with things like my P7, I carried things like Glocks, Kahr's, Etc. I never sell guns so I still have them all. Then I got a S&W 642 and that was a great pocket gun as was my guardian, Secamp etc. I had always been a fan of the 1911 and even those were of the hi tech variety. A C&S p12 and full custom guns from Vickers and Heinie. They were almost always finished in things like NP3 or Black T. They had mag wells and tritium straight eights. Upswept Beaver tails even on the Hight Power. They all sit in the safe.

Sure I bought early commercial models and Ruger 3 screw blackhawks. About a year ago a bought a reissue series 70 and while it sat I would look at it deciding what I wanted to do to it. As it sat, I grew to appreiate its simple beauty. I put the 500 rounds through it to break it in to make sure there wasn't anything that I needed to sound out before I sent it awat to the smith. Then my carry gun went away to become a Clark Meltdown and I found my self carrying that series 70 reissue. It grew on me to say the least.

I just dropped of what hopes to be my 2 new carry guns at the smith. 2 Springfield Milspecs. They will have the mainspring housing's replaced, Bulletproof extractors, triggers and C&S fire control parts with tradionally styled hammers. Thats it. No extended safties, bevertails, checkering, magwells etc. In the mean time what will I carry? It rotates between a Colt sherriffs model and that 642.

Over the years it has been my pleasure to know men like Charles Askins, Bill Jordon, Elmer Keith and Skeeter Skelton. They knew what a gunfight was from personal experience, and none of them ever carried a tricked out gun for business purposes. Action work? You bet. Custom grips? Sometimes. Gadgets? Never!

What they really cared about was reliability, the kind one could stake their life on. Then accuracy, becaue they had the skill to hit exactly where they wanted too at up to and including ranges most people couldn't believe.

So I guess you're going back to fundementals. Welcome to the club. Spend the money you save on ammunition and get some extra practice. You'll come out way ahead.
